‘They asked for it’: Democratic Peace Theory and Vietnamese perceptions of the Russo-Ukrainian War

Democratic Peace Theory argues that democratic countries are constrained by political forces in a manner that reduces the likelihood such states will resort to warfare to resolve disputes. This paper extends this argument to consider what happens when countries, democratic or otherwise, are forced to deal with nearby conflicts they are not engaged in themselves. Do political mechanisms still determine what decisions are made, or do cultural forces matter more, as has been suggested by critics of the theory? A case study of Vietnam responding to the Russo-Ukrainian war is used to explore these ideas, and some preliminary conclusions reached.

This study delves into the narratives employed by Belarusian propaganda during the Russo-Ukrainian War, examining 1,750 news items from Belarusian state media sources and the progovernment Telegram channels from September 1st to November 30th, 2022. The research employs the Looqme methodology, a robust content analysis approach that involves systematically coding and categorizing textual data to identify key thematic blocks and subthemes. The findings reveal a carefully crafted narrative aimed at demonizing Ukraine, promoting alternative realities, and glorifying military service. By portraying the West as a source of instability and danger, the propaganda fosters public support for Belarus’s stance on the conflict. Additionally, the study exposes the use of historical manipulation and reinforcement of negative portrayals through quoting Russian authorities. The study highlights the role of language manipulation and selective presentation of events in shaping public opinion, providing valuable insights for countering disinformation and fostering objective reporting in times of conflict.

The aim of this article is to analyze the phenomenon of the use of humor in information warfare based on the example of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Ethnic jokes and ‘border jokes’ that are present in the relations between the two nations are presented. Internet memes prepared and distributed by the Ukrainian side were also presented. The comedy series ‘Bunker’ is also discussed. The article concludes with a summary. The means used in order to achieve the said aim are theoretical methods, such as analysis, synthesis and inference on the basis of available sources, especially the Internet, and academic studies. The study found that Internet memes now play an important role in the information warfare used by Ukrainians against Russia. Through the use of humorous means, they manage to influence both the morale of their own society and soldiers, as well as the enemy and the international community. The Russian-Ukrainian war has shown that actions in the information sphere also play a major role in a classic military conflict and that the means of information warfare, as available to almost every citizen, can become an element of the state's general defense.

Celem artykułu jest analiza zjawiska wykorzystania treści o charakterze humorystycznym w walce informacyjnej na przykładzie wojny ukraińsko-rosyjskiej. Zaprezentowane zostały „żarty et-niczne” i „żarty graniczne”, funkcjonujące w relacjach między obu narodami. Przedstawiono również memy internetowe przygotowywane i rozpowszechniane przez stronę ukraińską. Omówiony został ko-mediowy serial „Bunkier”. Tekst wieńczy podsumowanie. Do realizacji przyjętego celu wykorzystane zostały metody teoretyczne, takie jak: analiza, synteza i wnioskowanie na podstawie dostępnych źródeł, w tym przede wszystkim internetowych, oraz opracowań naukowych. Wykazano, że memy internetowe odgrywają obecnie ważną rolę w wojnie informacyjnej prowadzonej przez stronę ukraińską przeciwko Rosji. Za pomocą środków o charakterze humorystycznym udaje im się wpływać zarówno na morale własnego społeczeństwa i żołnierzy, jak i nieprzyjaciela oraz społeczności międzynarodowej. Wojna rosyjsko-ukraińska pokazała, że działania w sferze informacyjnej odgrywają istotną rolę także w kla-sycznym konflikcie zbrojnym, a środki wojny informacyjnej, jako dostępne dla niemal każdego obywa-tela, mogą stać się elementem powszechnej obrony państwa.

Alternative transport routes from Europe to Asia after the outbreak of war

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to identify possible transport routes leading from Europe to Asia that bypass the territory of the Russian Federation or go through Russia and don't violate the sanctions. Design/methodology/approach: Comparative analysis, regional map analysis and case study are used. Map analysis allowed for the creation of various transport routes leading from Europe to Asia. The determining aspect affecting the course of a given route was access to transport infrastructure. The described case study shows the perspective of a small entrepreneur who wants to send his goods to Asia legally and in compliance with applicable sanctions. The comparative analysis made it possible to define new transport paths that largely coincide with the economic corridors of the New Silk Road. Findings: Possible routes for transporting goods from Europe to China were presented, with a focus on land and intermodal routes that avoided Russian Federation territory and ran through Central Asian countries. The possibility of omitting sanctions in the transport of goods from Europe to Asia was also shown. Research limitations/implications: Further research on this topic is suggested. A significant impediment in the creation of this article was the lack of access to numerical data from carriers performing the types of transport described in the article. Data worth analyzing concern the number of transports, the value and type of transported goods, transport costs, as well as qualitative data on the experience and good practices of carriers who carry out transport from Europe to China via Central Asia. Originality/value: The article describes the logistical problems of a transport nature that arose as a result of the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which, to the author's best knowledge, have never been described in detail before, nor have possible solutions to these problems been presented. The article is addressed to small entrepreneurs trading in Asian countries who cannot afford to use the services of intermediaries and are forced to organize transport on their own. The article also highlights the benefits for carriers by presenting alternative transportation routes that do not include Russia.

Główną część artykułu poświęcono na egzemplifikację i omówienie poszczególnych typów broni przeciwpancernej, a także środków ochronnych. Na bazie przeprowadzonego omówienia, a także analizy wydarzeń z konfliktu rosyjsko-ukraińskiego autor analizuje i wnioskuje jak będzie wyglądał rozwój przyszłych konstrukcji pancernych.

The aim of the article is to discuss the threat to tanks on the contemporary battlefield posed by modern precision anti-tank weapons, illustrated through examples such as kamikaze drones, loitering munitions and guided anti-tank missiles. The main part of the article focuses on exemplifying and discussing various types of anti-tank weaponry, as well as the protective measures against them. Based on the conducted analysis and examination of events from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the author explores and speculates on the future development of armored vehicle designs.
