Special education options are diverse and prepared to meet the needs of children with varying degrees of intellectual disabilities. However, many parents of children with an intellectual disability have a difficult time in organizing the religious educational alternatives for their children. A disabled child needs to be surrounded by catechetical specialist care. In this article, the author points out the pedagogical and catechetical challenges of special education and catechesis. At the beginning, three basic educational environments are presented followed by the major aspects of the Catholic religious education: knowledge of God, prayer, and preparation for the sacrament of Penance and the Eucharist.

In the face of cultural, economic and social changes a question arises about the shape of the ministry of the word. The article presents a reflection on believers’ religious expectations. One of their expectations is a thorough and exhaustive explanation of the content of the Christian faith. A starting point for such reflection is understanding that Christianity is not ‚the religion of the Book’ but‚ the religion of the word of God’. It should be underlined that the central point of the Christian faith is the person of Triune God, who, in incarnated Christ revealed His mystery. This assumption requires conscious actions, which, on the one hand, will shape the believers’ correct image of God, and, on the other hand, will teach them how to use the sources of faith, which make this image clearer. Another important factor is teaching believers how to use both natural cognition and religious cognition, which together help to discover that the centre of the Christian message is the prophecy of the Kingdom of God initiated in the person of Jesus Christ. Church actively promotes the message of salvation. Catechesis and religious upbringing play an especially important role in spreading this message, as they aim at shaping and upbringing a human being who respects the divine law.

The article deals with the issue of children being encouraged to listen to the word of God under parental guidance. The case of Samuel described in the Book of Samuel (1 Sm 3, 4–5. 8–10) shows that preparing children to listen to the word of God is possible and needed. God may talk to people directly in their consciousness, but this is by extraordinary means. God chooses the mediation of people as a regular way of communicating with the human beings. It is the parents who play the most important role in the process of preparing the child to listen to the word of God. In general, the aim of this is to strengthen their integral faith, i.e. the faith influencing daily life. There are also some particular aims discussed in the article, followed by some methods of helping pupils to develop their skill to give heed to the word of God, and the rules which should be respected in the discussed process. As the end of the article, the case of Antonietta Meo is being presented as the fruit of good religious upbringing towards the listening to the words of God.
