Choć od największej klęski ekologicznej jaka zdarzyła się w Polsce - zatrucie Odry i unicestwienie w niej życia biologicznego, minęło już pół roku, to do tej pory nie mamy jasnego stanowiska co ją spowodowało i jakie faktycznie skutki to przyniosło. Zlecony przez rząd raport o Odrze, określany przez autorów jako "wstępny", rzeczywiście wygląda dopiero jak wstęp do właściwego dokumentu. The territory adjoining the Polish and Czech border, the Katowice and Ostrawa voivodships in particular, constitute a zone in which the environment is greatly contaminated. As part of a special ecological scheme called "Silesia" a thorouh investigation of drinking water quality, food contamination and risk posed by dumps of industrial wastes was carried out. The results call for the coordinated action on the part of Poland and the Czech Republic as regards the improvement in the state of the natural environment.(original abstract)

Flash flood disasters often hit many areas in Indonesia and can generate vari-ous losses. These conditions are exacerbated by people's low knowledge and interest in their environment. Therefore, if people's environmental education increases, especially their flood disaster mitigation knowledge, they can be prepared and better protect themselves from such disasters. People's environ-mental education must start from determining the reason of the flood disaster in their environment to discovering how to avoid the disaster. This research design is a one-group post-test design. The collected data in this research is a written test result about knowledge in flash flood disaster mitigation materi-als as an implementation in environmental education in the community. The research data results were analyzed by means of simple regression, logistics regression, and correlation. Based on this research, environmental education with disaster mitigation materials has a high understanding level. In the dis-aster step, the highest understanding is before it happens. The correlation be-tween educational strata and gender on environmental education and disaster mitigation materials is low. Finally, the role of women in disaster mitigation needs to improve because they have a higher understanding than males of dis-aster mitigation materials.(original abstract)

W artykule przedstawiono meteorologiczne warunki powstania i mechanizm działania wyjątkowo silnej trąby powietrznej, która przeszła nad Pogórzem Orawsko-Jordanowskim i Kotliną Nowotarską w dniu 29 maja 2001 roku. Oprócz sytuacji synoptycznej przedstawiono charakterystykę satelitarnych obrazów zachmurzenia oraz burz i opadów towarzyszących trąbie. Na podstawie zebranej kartograficznej i fotograficznej dokumentacji terenowej określono jej zasięg, sposób oddziaływania; opracowano skutki, jakie spowodowała w przyrodzie i straty w infrastrukturze technicznej. Wskazano na znaczne zaśmiecenie dużej powierzchni użytków rolnych i związane z nim zagrożenia. Dokonano klasyfikacji zaistniałych przemian, akcentując skutki trwałe, które dają początek dalszemu łańcuchowi przemian w przyrodzie. (abstrakt oryginalny)

The paper presents meteorological conditions and the mechanisms of action concerning the occurrence of the tornado, which crossed above Orawsko-Jordanowskie Foothills and Nowotarska Basin on 29 May 2001. Apart from synoptic situation, a characteristic of satellite images showing cloudiness, thunderstorms and precipitation accompanying the tornado was resented, too. The cartographic and photographic documentation allowed determine the range and influence of the tornado, concerning both natural environment and technical infrastructure. Large areas of agricultural land were covered with garbage created by the tornado, which is a threat for the functioning of those ecosystems. The changes were classified with special focus on permanent ones, which stimulate further changes in the environment. (original abstract)

Przedmiotem opracowania jest stan klęski ekologicznej Górnośląskiego Okręgu Przemysłowego narastający szczególnie po II wojnie światowej na skutek nadmiernej koncentracji przemysłu ciężkiego i wydobywczego w tym regionie. Autor zwrócił uwagę na ogromne zniszczenia w środowisku i zdrowiu społeczności lokalnych, a także na niską świadomość ekologiczną i zdrowotną ludności potęgującą niską jakość życia.

The deep and vast ecological crisis which among other crisis phenomena was disclosed in Poland in the early 1980s was a consequence of the activity of the communist authorities. The government developed a totalitarian type of the economy with priority given to the mining and heavy industries as a base for armaments. These circumstances made Upper Silesia with its long established mining and heavy industries an area of exceptionally brutal and wasteful exploitation. Insistance on mining as much coal as possible and locating investments devastating the environment was caused by a constant quest for the means needed for further development of heavy industry and the formation of a solid economic and technical base for the arms industry. The result of over forty years of such an economy is an unprecedented ecological disaster in the area of Upper Silesia.(original abstract)
