The object of the essay is prophecy in the Qur’ān, through the stories of the prophets and the language they use. Specifically, the Qur’ānic narrative and Joseph’s speeches have been systematically examined, with the intention of introducing a symmetrical reading of the story between incidents and the specific language. Emphasis has been placed on the philological aspects, by focusing the analysis on the Arabic version of the Qur’ān, in order to try to draw up a personal profile of Joseph and, at the same time, to attempt to counter an approach that claims to see all the Qur’ānic envoys only in their instrumental function in the mission of Muḥammad.
One of the central metaphors in the New Testament involves the familial imagery of God as “father” and Jesus as God’s “son.” The epithet of “son of God” for Jesus is understood by Christians to be metaphorical, rather than literal, and evokes a complex network of theological concepts. However, for Muslims, these epithets for God are extremely problematic-according to the Qur’ān, God “begetteth not nor was he begotten.” This article compares the renderings of divine familial terms in two Arabic translations representing indigenizing and foreignizing approaches to translation within Islamic contexts and explores the implications of each translation in promoting different kinds of covert religious selfcensorship.
The Qur’ān was never translated into Church Slavic in its entirety; still, in the writings of some mediaeval Christian authors (Byzantine and Latin) quite extensive quotations and borrowings from it can be found. Many of these texts were transmitted in the Slavia Orthodoxa area. The aim of this article is to present the Church Slavic literary sources which contain quotations from the Qur’ān. The analysis covers Slavic translations of Byzantine and Latin authors as well as original texts of Slavic provenance. The main conclusion of the research is that only ca. 2% of the text of the Qur’ān has been preserved in the Church Slavic material.
The article is devoted to the analysis of Polish translations of the first sura of the Quran, Al-Fātiḥa (“The Opening sura”). The analysis covers 14 translations from the years 1830-2018, both direct translations from Arabic, as indirect – from English, French, Russian and German. The analysis focuses especially on some particular words and expressions, notably Basmala and Allāh. The analysis is preceded by a short introduction describing the role of Al-Fātiḥa in Muslim faith and everyday life.
