To better understand the experience of unschooling, non-directive in-depth interviews with five Quebec adults who had experienced it were conducted according to a phenomenological approach, revealing their perceptions of their educational experiences and their families, as well as their views of the world. Certain aspects of the testimonies corroborate the results of previous studies concerning self-directed learning, use of information technology, development of interests, and participation in a support group; others reveal limits when it comes to learning perseverance, pursuit of complex learning goals, school integration, and evaluation. The participants also spoke of family conflicts, parental control, negligence, and the influence of this experience on their views of society, work, the school system, and the role of government in education.

The study, focusing on the writings of A. Maillet – the founding figure of modern Acadian literature – deals with the question whether the well-known Acadian and Quebec author might be considered as canonical. An analysis of the canonical novel “Pélagie-la-Charrette”, written in 1979, draws on the contemporary context and Bloom´s “The Canon of Western Literature”, canonical characteristics of the genres being relevant to the analysed text. The analysis reveals that the author substantially revises the traditional Acadian canon when fictionalizing historicity. Confronting multiple canons, A. Maillet creates a hybrid, aesthetically appealing poly-semantic text that promotes her from the “periphery” towards the “western literary canon”.

This case study of Québécois scholar Pierre Anctil reveals the unusual intellectual trajectory of a social anthropologist who has translated an assortment of material from Yiddish into French: poetry, memoirs, literary history, and archival material. He has drawn on these sources, previously unavailable to scholars unfamiliar with the language in which they were written, and has made use of them to construct a fresh historical narrative. The article examines his motives for translating, along with the wide-ranging impact of his work in literary and scholarly circles, as well as in the public sphere.
