Irkutsk, a one of the largest cities in south-eastern Siberia, is a vital industrial, cultural, and scholarly center. It is estimated that, every fifth Siberian resident has Polish bloodlines. In the Irkutsk oblast currently has 23 different Polish organizations that are active and nurturing Polish language, culture, and traditions on foreign soil, among which the Polish Cultural Autonomy 'Ogniwo', stems from the early 19th century. Since 2015, the Center for Polish Language at the Department of Philology and Journalism at the State University of Irkutsk, enjoys an attendance of around 50 students for Polish language courses.
