The author refers to an ongoing discussion on the original patrimony of the Piast dynasty and the opportunities created by the analysis of archaeological finds for the settling of the said issue. The theory underscoring the crucial importance of the Kalisz region at the time of the emergence of the dynasty is opposed by the view of researchers from Poznań opting for the role and importance of the Giecz land in these processes. The author undertakes to assess the different source assumptions regarding the two centers and offers a new approach to the issue. The assumption in this case is that both the Kalisz and Giecz centers were part of the oldest Piast patrimony right from the start.
