This report on Pediastrum privum (Printz) Hegewald in Lake Małe Zmarłe (Tuchola Forest) is only the second for Poland and the first to describe its morphological variability in a natural population. This study was performed using light microscopy (LM) micrographs, together with data on its ecology.

Results of pollen analysis and records of fossil plankton organisms indicate human activity in catchment areas of lakes. These records of human impact depend on the form of anthropogenic activity, scale of settlement processes and location of the zones of activity. Comparison of the two records, which illustrate transformations of terrestrial and limnic habitats, may indicate the zones of human activity. Some examples of correlation of palynological human impact indicators and Pediastrum from lakes in Wielkopolska have been discussed.

An account is given of the occurrence of Pediastrum (Chlorophyceae, Sphaeropleales) in five eutrophic coastal lakes (Jamno, Bukowo, Gardno, Łebsko and Sarbsko) in northern Poland, together with morphological data of the species and more detailed taxonomic and ecological information for three taxa which appear to be rare world wide. These are P. musterii, P. orientale and P. alternans; the first is recorded for the first time from central Europe. P. orientale and P. alternans show considerable morphological variability under different environmental conditions, indicating the need for further studies. The studied lakes seem to be especially favourable for Pediastrum, with a total of eight species (15 taxa) in the phytoplankton noted during the summer. However, the relative frequency of the genus in the overall algal communities was low. The most frequent species were P. boryanum, P. kawraiskyi and P. duplex and these were accompanied by cyanobacteria, coccal green algae (Chlorophyceae, Chlorococcales) and diatoms (Bacillariophyceae). All the Pediastrum taxa were documented using LM and SEM.

During studies of phytoplankton in Sumin Lake (Łęczna-Włodawa Lakeland), conducted from May till September 2001 and 2002, 15 taxa of the genus Pediastrum (Hydrodictyaceae, Sphaeropleales) were found. Among them there were common species as Pediastrum boryanum, P. duplex, P. tetras and P. simplex, but also rare species as P. integrum or P. kawraiskyi. An especially interesting species was P. orientale, the taxon that until now has not been noted in phytoplankton of Polish water bodies. The paper gives descriptions of the genus Pediastrum coenobia and physico-chemical conditions of the habitat. The original documentation of Pediastrum taxa is added.
