The article presents the image of Podlasie and Bialystok in three comic books: Tymczasem by Grzegorz Janusz and Przemysław Truściński, Pocztówki z Białegostoku by Joanna Karpowicz, and Siedem + dwa by Paulina Drobnikowska and Andrzej Bajguz. The spaces analysed are fragmentary in character, while Joanna Karpowicz's comic reveals especially clearly the relationship between metaphorical narrative and fragmentary nature of the comic and the image of Bialystok which is a palimpsest of things, with its contemporary architecture enriched with images from the city's cultural and ethnic past. The comic books analysed represent various means of describing space, while their shared characteristic is the subject matter of multi-culturalism, ethnicity, memory, identity, history and youth
The paper presents the development of Podlasie’s industry in the 1970s and 1980s. Those years saw a narrowing of the gap in terms of industrialisation between the areas of the former Białystok Voivodeship and the rest of Poland. The gap was not, however, completely closed; later years showed the superficiality of top-down industrialisation and centrally-led efforts to modernise the local industrial structure. On the other hand, the transformation that took place at that time meant a permanent departure from the dominance of agriculture in the region and sped up its urban development, even if, from a certain point, it did not involve the development of the industrial function of urban areas. Moreover, it was in that period that a firm foundation was provided for specialisation in the food industry, allowing for subsequent expansion of this industry in times of market economy, with the best companies in the position of national leaders.
The aim of this article is to shed light on the role of Podlasie in Andrzej Stasiuk’s latest prose, especially in texts such as Fado, Grochów and Wschód. After a brief excursus examining what issues are raised in relation to this region in contemporary Polish prose, the analysis sheds light on the values attributed to Podlasie and the way it is represented by Stasiuk. I shall argue that it is thematised accordingly to commonly shared meanings attached to the region and constitutes the final step of the author’s shaping of “imaginary geographies”, which acquires in Stasiuk’s poetics a precise connotation as both a place of remembrance and a symbolic, constructed image of the Orient.
The article focuses on the local narratives of the Podlasie region as represented by Edward Redliński, Sokrat Janowicz, Michał Androsiuk, Jan Kamiński and Ignacy Karpowicz. The author presents the transformations of tendencies in the Podlasie prose of the latest half-century, from the poetics of sociological document to the poetics of grotesque and magical realism, interpreting these transformations as characteristic of new regionalism.
