Małgorzata Imielska’s drama Chciałam ci tylko powiedzieć... (I just wanted to tell you...) has enormous interpretative potential. In an intriguing way it combines the problem of schizophrenia with the issue of multiplying of reality which is a result of using the media of television and amateur video camera. Application of the conversation theory (politeness theory and implicatures) and contemporary media studies (especially video technology) in the present analysis has allowed the author to show a complex relationship between the characters of the drama in question: the mother and her mentally retarded daughter. Thanks to the video technology a conversation takes place, even though it seems both apparently impossible (it annuls the borderline between life and death) and exceptionally straightforward at the same time (the first time when the women choose to speak frankly and listen carefully to each other). It turns out that the video camera and VHS cassette not only have the unavoidable function of separating interlocutors but are also able to form McLuhan’s “prosthesis”, a genuine extension, a link that brings interlocutors closer to one another.
