Concentratin of total mercury was determined in muscle tissue of cod Gadus morhua, herring Clupea harengus, eel Anguilla anguilla, calpout Zoarces viviparus, perch Perca fluvitalis, pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca, sand eel Hyperoplus lanceolatus, round goby Negobius melanostomus, brown trout Salmo trutta, trout Salmo gairdneri, flounder Platychtis flesus, turbot Psetta mazima, smelt Osmerus eperlanus and sculpin Cottus scorpius caught in the Gulf of Gdansk in 1986-1993.The measurements of mercury concentrations were performed by the method of cold vapour atomic absorption spectrmetry (CV-AAS), after wet digestion of samples with concentrated nitric acid.The highest mean concentration of mercury was found in eelpout, the lowest one in pikeperch.The possitive linear correlations has been found between the body length and mercury concentration in perch, eelpout, sand launce and flounder.

Emission of mercury to the atmosphere at different point sources has been measured.The changes in concentration with distance from the source have been investigated. Similarly, changes in mercury concentration with heihgt have been assessed. A preliminary budged of mercury input from the atmosphere in the Polish Baltic zone has been estimated.

Measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) were carried out in the Polish coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk from Hel, situated at the end the tip of the Hel Peninsula, to Piaski in the Vistula Pit. The results were recorded in the atmosphere 150 cm above the ground using an automatic analyzer Gardis 1A in March, April and May 1999. The mercury concentration over the coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk did not exceed maximum permissible levels and were at levels similar to those in other maritime regions of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The average concentration of mercury was 3.4 ng m-3. Increased TGM concentrations of approximately 8.2 ng m-3 occurred locally near the sewage treatment facility in Sztutowo, on the tip of the Hel Peninsula and in the Tri-Cities near the industrial areas of shipyards and the harbor. No increased concentrations of gaseous mercury were registered in the vicinity of the heat and power plant or the refinery as chimneys release fumes at high altitudes. What is more, the mercury concentrations recorded in the forests of the Vistula Lagoon and the Hel Pit were nine times lower than the average concentration. Laboratory experiments carried out on samples of sea water from three coastal measurement stations proved that mixing in the sea surf zone influences the emission of mercury from the water into the atmosphere. The emission of gaseous mercury from the surface waters of the Gulf of Gdansk was higher in March when the life processes in the water were still slow and bio-accumulation was very limited.

The Domiaza is a fragment of the Oder river estuary situated north of Szczecin. This area is exposed to complex hydrological processes and strong anthropogenic pressure. Key physical and chemical parameters of the Domiaza sediments (fraction < 2mm), e.g., dry residue (Ds), ignition loss (Iz), CaCO3 and organic carbon content, show high coefficients of variation (over 60%). Similar variation is typical of the heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cd and Hg) and the organic carbon content in the fraction smaller than 0.20 mm. The spatial distribution of the examined parameters in the Domiaza sediments results from the dynamics of this environment, especially the heavy watercraft traffic and the continuous dredging of the Szczecin-Swinoujscie water lane. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb and Co found in the Domiaza sediments are higher than those found in the geochemical background of Poland, while concentrations of mercury are comparable. Moreover, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd found in the Domiaza sediments are higher than the average concentrations of these metals in adjacent areas (Oder River, Dabie Lake, Szczecin Lagoon), but the concentrations of Hg and Co are comparable or lower depending on the area of reference. A survey of heavy metals concentrations conducted in 1999 detected higher than average concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, and particularly Co (twice) and Hg (over thirty times), and lower concentrations of Cd in comparison with the average levels of 1996. The reason for these differences was the selective inflow of heavy metals to the Domiaza area after the disastrous flood of 1997.
