This essay seeks to show the Polish household in the communist time as a space of modernity and modernisation activities. The chronological framework is set between 1957 – the date the Home Economics Committee affiliated to the League of Women was set up to contribute to, and be a mouthpiece of, the everyday life modernisation policy – and 1980, being the symbolic borderline between the modernity discourse and the Polish 1980–1 crisis discourse about household. In this context, the article reconstructs both the activities of social actors who created the ‘scenarios of modernity’ for the household and the reception of the messages in question in the village of Bogate in the District (powiat) of Przasnysz.

Jak zmieniał się ruch kobiecy w Polsce po 1945 r.? Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytania, jakie były cele ruchu kobiecego po II wojnie światowej oraz jakie strategie wybierały działaczki kobiece, wdrażając plany emancypacyjne. Argumentuję w nim, że „produktywizacja” kobiet, upolitycznienie ruchu kobiecego, a także jego umasowienie stanowiły główne osie działania ruchu kobiecego po 1945 r. Jednocześnie cele i strategie emancypacyjne realizowane w powojennej Polsce były zbieżne zarówno z działaniami podejmowanymi na Zachodzie, jak i tymi w ramach instytucji międzynarodowych (np. Światowej Demokratycznej Federacji Kobiet).

In what way did women’s movement in Poland develop after 1945? This article is an attempt to answer the question on what the goals of women’s movement after World War II were, and what strategies were chosen to fulfill emancipatory agendas after 1945. I argue that women’s productivisition, along with politicisation of women’s movement and an attempt to build a massive women’s organisation were the main axes of the women’s movement policy after 1945. These goals and strategies were coherent with activities carried in the West and by international organisations (Women’s International Democratic Federation).

The analysis of the activities and the evaluation of the achievements of the League of Women deputies in the Legislative Sejm (1947–1952) allows us to understand the political position they achieved in the official parliamentary bodies and their influence on legislation. An assessment of their achievements in this field will be more comprehensive when we compare their agency with the achievements of both female parliamentarians not affiliated to the Women’s League and male deputies.

Społeczno-Obywatelska Liga Kobiet powstała w sierpniu 1945 r. Od początku była organizacją prorządową wspieraną przez PPR. Jej cel stanowiło kształtowanie postaw politycznych i obywatelskich kobiet. Treści propagandowe rozpowszechniano za pośrednictwem prasy, na szkoleniach ideologicznych oraz w trakcie oficjalnych zebrań i uroczystości. Szczegółowa analiza działalności propagandowej organizacji obrazuje zmieniające się podejście władz Polski Ludowej do roli kobiet w społeczeństwie w latach 1945–1956. The Social and Civil League of Women was established in August 1945. From the very beginning it was a pro-government organisation supported by the Polish Workers’ Party. Its purpose was to shape political and civic attitudes of women. Propaganda was spread through the press, at ideological courses, official meetings and ceremonies. A thorough analysis of propagandist activities of the League depicts a changing attitude of the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic to the role of women in society in 1945–1956.
