The aim of the article was to demonstrate the usefulness of computer simulation in the cell/line restructuring process. FlexSim 3D Simulation Software with built-in Process Flow Module was used in the study. Article contains description and explanation, why FlexSim as simulation program is useful to use in restructuring manufacturing cell/line from traditional merge production to one piece flow and what are the advantages of it. In this article the example of scheduling work of operators in a work centre by a lap has been used. (original abstract)
The material of a part or component has a decisive impact on the complexity and laboriousness of assembly process. Thus, solid, fragile and flexible parts and components are all handled in a different way. The present paper classifies some of the most common types of materials parts are usually made of, while also analyzing their impact on the assembly process. In mechanical engineering, solid parts are most often used, given that these do not require special measures in known assembly orientation and handling techniques. However, such solid materials poses everal challenges as well, and this mainly due to their several specific shapes, which means a specific problem in gripping and especially in their orientation during the assembly process. In this regard, the paper also addresses with one of the most important and assembly-troublesome properties of these solid parts, which the degree of symmetry. The degree of symmetry of solid parts has a direct impact on the complexity and laboriousness of their orientation in assembly. The last part of the paper focuses on the theoretical basis for the calculation of complexity and laboriousness in the assembly of parts. (original abstract)
A paradox of our time is identified: on the one hand - the development of one global system (ecological, technological and social), on the other hand - the still increasing "balkanization" of science. The dynamics of this systems is a source of well-known numerous global problems. Its possibly effective solution needs adequate knowledge about the system. For this reason, counteraction to "balkanization" of science is of great practical importance. And this counteraction should comprise not only development of "transboundary" sciences (such as biochemistry or social psychology) but also establishing and developing links between very distant disciplines. This text is intended as a contribution to linking social and engineering sciences. The notion of design plays the central role in this text. Its meaning in the engineering sciences. The notion of utopia has been chosen as a partial counterpart to the term of engineering design. This notion was defined using a concept of possible world - taken from modal logic. It encompasses two ideas: this of design and that of prediction, It is claimed that we need many utopias and that their plurality is of fundamental importance for protecting us against the threats of utopianism. The paper suggests that social utopias can play a heuristic role in engineering design (particularly in the initial phase of defining technological problems), and - on the other hand - that the theory of engineering design can be supportive for, badly needed, development of methodology of utopias creation. Purpose: The aim of the paper is to analyze the concept of sustainable engineering. Design/methodology/approach: Critical literature analysis. Analysis of international literature from main databases and polish literature and legal acts connecting with researched topic. Findings: The publication concentrate on problems connected with sustainable engineering. Especially there is a presentation of main principles of sustainable engineering. In the case of each principle there is an description of those topic with the approaches and the analysis of its importance in industrial organization. The sustainability is an very important concept which can be used in in Industry 4.0 implementation. We should mention that efficient engineering organization should know how to link the sustainability and Industry 4.0 concepts. This can bring the market advantage due to new technology implementation and sustainable production from business and environmental point of view. Originality/value: Detailed analysis of all subjects related to the problems connected with sustainable engineering principles.(original abstract)
The article is to present the application of genetic algorithm in production scheduling in a production company. In the research work the assumptions of the methodology were described and the operation of the proposed genetic algorithm was presented in details. Genetic algorithms are useful in complex large scale combinatorial optimisation tasks and in the engineering tasks with numerous limitations in the production engineering. Moreover, they are more reliable than the existing direct search algorithms. The research is focused on the effectivity improvement and on the methodology of scheduling of a manufacturing cell work. The genetic algorithm used in the work appeared to be robust and fast in finding accurate solutions. It was shown by experiment that using this method enables obtaining schedules suitable for a model. It ives a group of solutions that are at least as good as those created by the heuristic rules.(original abstract)
The activities of the organisation concentrate mainly on meeting customers' requirements. For this purpose, various activities are being conducted for customer satisfaction surveys. In this context, it is important to predict the quality of the product and the changes in the cost of the purchase product. The purpose of this study is to propose a method for predicting the quality level of a product and change the cost of the product considering current customers' requirements for a combination of product feature states and pro-quality changes. The method includes the calculation of the quality level of the product using the punctationformalised method, where the level depends on a combination of values of states (parameters) attributes of the product, that is, current and modified. The method was tested as an example of a household vacuum cleaner for which 20 attributes were determined. According to the Pareto rule (20/80), the four product attributes important for customers were selected. Thereafter, for important attributes, possible combinations of the values of these attributes were determined. In addition, an algorithm for determining the possible combinations of product attribute states in the MATLAB program was developed. Additionally, the change in the current cost of the product considering the change in the quality level was estimated. The product cost changes were determined based on the actual cost of the product and the current product quality level. The method allows the determination of all combinations of values of state attributes of the product, such that it is possible to take appropriate improvement actions both in terms of quality and cost. The results from the method allow the prediction of product satisfaction for customers and they are favourable in terms of production cost. Therefore, it is possible to design the product in advance and support the producer in preparatory activities. (original abstract)
The aim of the article is to propose the combination of selected quality management instruments in a sequential and repetitive manner and to identify the incompatibilities and causes of its occurrence. This is a combination of techniques i.e.: brainstorming (BM), causes and effects diagram, multiply voting, and the 5Why method. The test of the proposed combination of the selected quality management instruments was made for the problem of the incompatibility of the product in an enterprise located in the Podkarpacie. This problem was the non-metallic inclusions on the bearing housing from CPW 407 steel. The proposed combination of the selected quality management instruments was integrated with the non-destructive testing (NDT). The originality of the study is to propose the combination of selected quality management instruments as a part of a single method, whose stages can occur in a sequential and repetitive manner. Purpose: The aim of the study is to analyze environmental awareness among employees of companies producing plastics, and subsequently to draw conclusions about the level of their pro-environmental awareness. The motive for the implementation of pro-environmental awareness research in plastics-producing plants was their harmful impact on the environment. Design/methodology/approach: The research was a survey that was carried out among 44 workers of plastics enterprises located in south-eastern Poland in the first quarter of 2018. During the selection of companies for research, it was included: their location (south-eastern Poland), long-term operation (more than 30 years), the same type of activity (production of plastics), and whether pro-environmental activities were practiced. Findings: It was concluded that the level of awareness of the employees of plastic industry employees was on a low level. Research limitations/implications: The research sample is only a preliminary sample. It is planned to obtain data from a larger number of companies and verify the data. Practical implications: Enterprises should focus on meeting customer needs and maintaining high-quality products, but taking into account pro-environmental measures that should be a priority. This is possible if pro-environmental awareness is continually shaped. Social implications: The pro-environmental awareness is small among employees from the enterprises, in which pro-environmental actions were not practiced. Employees do not know how the processes are carried out in the company and whether they have any impact on the natural environment. Additionally, the employees of companies not used pro-environmental activities are unaware of the threats resulting from the activities of their company and do not know that other companies about the same activities already apply such activities. Originality/value: These results will allow better decisions in the context of sustainability and improvement actions to achieve a higher level of awareness among the plastic production companies' employees.(original abstract)
