The article is devoted to the relationship of Hieronim Florian Radziwiłł and his second wife, Magdalena z Czapskich. The marriage which was contracted in 1745 lasted for only a few years after which the duchess shared the fate of the magnate’s first wife and in 1750 she fled her husband. On the basis of the extant correspondence the complex relations of the married couple were presented, beginning from the secret wedding that was planned, in a time when Radziwiłł was in the state of separation from his first wife, until the letters which bear the post -1750 date, when the requests of the great lady to her husband that he sent her her things were left unanswered. In the article special emphasis is placed on Radziwiłłowa’s letters which are full of complaints and regret, sent to her husband during his absence from home when the magnate left Biała to engage in business or entertain- ment

The article describes the collection of letters of Pomeranian voivode’s wife Konstacja Czapska addressed to her daughter Magdalena and her son-in-law, duke Hieronim Florian Radziwiłł. The letters from the collection of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw appeared to be a very important and useful source to research the history of this stormy marriage, which was taken probably in 1745 and ended after several years by its annulment. The emotional relation between Magdalena and Hieronim Radziwiłł was shown in recently published letters of Magdalena addressed first to her fiancé and later husband (introduction and ed. I. Maciejewska, K. Zawilska, Olsztyn 2016). Letters written by Konstancja Czapska are a priceless voice in understanding the marriage, yet they were not given much space in the aforementioned edition for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, it is a very interesting collection, showing the author’s correspondence talent and intelligence and also the ability to diversify her statements depending on the aim and addressee. It is an interesting evidence of the relationship between a mother and a daughter, which is important not only at the moment of arranging the marriage taken in unusual circumstances, but also when it becomes a source of support during the crisis in the marriage.

Artykuł traktuje o środowisku malarzy i rzeźbiarzy w Białej Podlaskiej za księcia Hieronima Floriana Radziwiłła (1747–1760). Zostaną w nim poruszone kwestie dotyczące kształtowania się grupy artystów dworskich, ich pochodzenia oraz życia społecznego i artystycznego, a także sposobów współpracy artystów różnego pochodzenia. The article presents the community of artists (painters and sculptors) in Biała Podlaska under Prince Hieronim Florian Radziwiłł (1747–1760). The study focuses on the problem of artists’ origins and characterizes their social and professional life. It presents social and cultural differences between the artists of various origins, and also describes their coexistence and interactions.
