The aim of this study is not a redundant accumulation of different opinions or exhausting cross-section of all present literary critical evaluations of the epos Cirillo-Metodiada, but, especially, reflective and problematic viewing on selected facts influencing the reception of this work in past and nowadays. Therefore, the first part of the study outlines the question of usefulness or uselessness of the interpretative returns to works of literary past. In that manner we create the platform for the second part in which we try to notice discrepancy between the author’s intention of Ján Hollý and incomplete grip of this intention by readers and cultural public of the particular era. We base from the well-known terminology of Umberto Eco which represents the discrepancy between the author’s and reader’s intention, while independently from both of these intentions persist the intention of the literary text itself. In the third part we think about the epos Cirillo-Metodiada in context of the efforts for an intra literary translation of the work of Ján Hollý, while the motivation we see in its updating and also accessing to wider base of readers.

The study analyses the structural elements of the story of three members of Štúr’s group to the poet Ján Hollý. The meeting of representatives of the Protestant and Catholic intelligentsia in 1843 is one of the key moments in the Slovak national historical narrative. It symbolizes national unity overcoming confessional limitations. The author investigates this story as a part of nationalist propaganda, pointing to its use for the needs of national ideology.

The idyll has an important position in Hollý´s poetic production. This type of poetry can be found throughout his literary activity. It significantly affects the way his poetic production is assessed as a whole, and it defines its place in the development of Slovak poetry. The Christmas idylls Miloslav, Vitoslav and Spasitel/Messiah are not only confined to the contemplation of the spiritual level of the Christmas mystery as the fulfilment of God´s plan of salvation, but they offer several interpreter levels. They also prove Hollý´s poetic craftsmanship satisfying the most stringent poetry criteria as well as his intense relationship to the domestic cultural and the literary tradition.

Korešpondencia Jána Hollého /The Correspodence of Ján Hollý/, edited by Jozef Ambruš, who published it along with valuable and detailed notes in 1967, is the principal source to have when studying the personality of one of the most significant Slovak poets as well as refining the complex image of Slovak cultural and literary life in the first half of the 19th century. Besides other things, there can be found an important evidence of inter-confessional contacts and cooperation between literary active notables from both Catholic and Protestant environments. This proves that the still existing myth of the mutual „enmity“ between the two „camps“ based on confessional criteria needs to be dispelled.
