The article deals with two approaches to constructing a historical narrative: that of Hayden White, who considers historical narratives to be narrative interpretations. He argues that the plurality of historical narratives arises from the plurality of narrative forms used in the representations of the past. For M. Mandelbaum, N. Carroll and D. Carr on the other side the historical representation of the past is a sort of map or copy of reality. According to the author, both conceptions face the problem of selecting those historical narratives, which would not provoke objections on the side of historians. He argues that constructing a historical narrative associates necessarily with different interpretations of sources as well as different representations of the past.

The paper deals with selected methodological problems of historical knowledge. In the introduction, the authors consider existing disputes in the methodology of the historical sciences: naturalism and anti-naturalism, nomothetism and ideographism, synchronism and diachronism. The authors seek a key to solution of these contradictions in overcoming the anti-historical conception of human nature or the essence of man, the structure of society and social science laws. They concentrate their attention on the analysis of the historical retrospective and historical genesis. They show that the unification of these two approaches enables a theoretical basis for historiography and establishment of the problem of integration of the nomological explanation and humanist interpretation. In another part of the work, they consider the nature of historical narrative. They distinguish the shaping of a story in art and in historiography, and they analyse the problem of the truth and meaning of historical narrative and its criteria.

One of the consequences of the Polish thaw that came in the wake of October 1956 developments, was a change in the role played by mass organizations. They assume a paternalistic, clientist and inclusive nature. The activities of these organizations are accompanied by the strengthening of personal ties, arranged in a complex network of informal influences and mutual obligations. That spontaneous form of social self-organization, secondary compared to the formal structures of the People's Republic of Poland, is a characteristic feature of the realities of the 1960s; by praying on state institutions, it stabilized the system at the same time. The article presents the antecedents of the events of 1967 and 1968 in the light of the activities of the Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy (ZBoWiD), showing its operations both in the social and ideological sphere. Twenty years after the war the war veterans are getting old, increasingly becoming 'professional' war veterans, who profit from acting in the Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy, if they decide to act that way. At the same time, as they find the time to engage in public life, they exert an influence on official stories about World War II, which are stories of Poland's martyrdom and resistance movement.

The author connects the process of alignment with the problem of rewriting history. From the point of view of representatives of the realist view (G. Elton, M. Mandelbaum) professional work of historians will result in the creation of one picture of the past. The representatives of the constructionist view of history (H. White, F. Ankersmit) emphasize literal and construction features of writing narrative history which result in permanently rewriting history and the creation of plurality historical narratives. The author points out the relevance of the theoretical and ideological dimension of historical narration, which is mentioned in Jerzy Topolski´s understanding of the structure of historical narrative. He assumes that the legitimacy of the historian´s image of the past depends on his/her success in forming historical knowledge with update and value saturated (ideological) perspective.

The paper is aimed at the category of unreliability of the narrative text. The author builds on narratological works which consider fictional and historical texts as different types of narratives. Essential difference can be identified in the sphere of reference of these texts and in both basic levels of common narratological model of analyses – in the level of discourse and story. The paper presents a set of mutually linked differences as a border between two different contexts of “unreliability”. Quotation marks express an opinion that narrator’s unreliability (theoretically elaborated in connection with fictional narrative) cannot be analogically applied in analyses of “unreliable narration” in historical text. After a brief summary of parallel aspects of narrativity, the author pays attention to giving reasons for two different regimes of “unreliability” as well as to selection of suitable terminology.

Proposed essay elaborates on Karol Jetting’s travelogues written in the late of the 18th century from historical, literary, and mixed perspectives. At the beginning, the author provides existing facts and opinions regarding the person known as Karol Jetting, and confronts these with her own findings. The author uses the direct method of critical insight and examines the researched text as historical narrative source, and while taking into consideration identified literary elements, she investigates the credibility and probability of the available historical value of the text. In the thesis conclusion the author presents her own results from the investigation of the character known as Karol Jetting, which, supported by the text analysis, lead her to consider the text not possessing deeper historical value. Presented conclusion is in contrast with existing opinions regarding the person known as Karol Jetting and disproves their real existence.
