The three Synoptic Gospels narrate the story of Jesus’ healing of Simon’s mother in-law as a part of their account of the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. The focus of this article are the christological contours of the three variants, that is, differences in their portrayal of Jesus. To highlight the uniqueness of each evangelist in regard to the christological aspect of the story, the article employs a combination of lexical analysis, synoptic comparison, and semantic approach. It seeks to identify the significance of the changes made by Matthew and Luke vis-à-vis their Marcan counterpart, and sketch the christological profile of each evangelist.

Ritual Calus is a still living ritual practice at Pentecost (Whitsuntide) in the southern regions of Romania. Considered at a synchronic level, it reveals a great variety of structures and meanings that represent different stages of transformation. This article is based primarily on the long-time fieldwork experience and information resulting from the dialogues with tradition bearers, the direct observation and the analysis and interpretation of visual and written documents. The intention is to present the ritual calus in its contemporary existence and try to disclose the reasons of its survival. Subsequently the intention is to comment the role given to calus as a national symbol and the manipulation therewith for legitimating the political power under the Communist dictatorship. Finally, the future existence of the ritual calus will be questioned in the light of the UNESCO program for the safeguarding of the cultural heritage. In an introductory section, however, calus will be situated in a large European cultural context and described in more general terms in order to illuminate the complex structure of the ritual and the intricate relationship established among and between the component elements.

This article examines Merlinda Bobis’s novel The Solemn Lantern Maker (2008) with recourse to affect theories on terror and vulnerability. The narrative addresses harsh realities like children’s prostitution, extreme poverty, and brutal corruption, and puts these apparently Philippine “domestic” matters in direct relation to globalization and to the so-called war on terror. The analysis of the narrative pays attention to the strategies of resilience and healing developed by vulnerable civilians, taking into account the increasing degrees of risk at the intersection of race, ethnic, class, age and gender differences. It examines how such differences are negotiated in the text via reciprocal care among the main characters in a context of extreme violence.
