This issue discusses several accounts devoted to the dispute between Catholics and Greek Catholics of Przemyśl, which concerned the handing over of the former Carmelite church to the Uniates. The dispute over the church in spring 1991 was in fact an argument between the Poles and the Ukrainians over the status of Greek Catholicism. Eventually the church remained in the hands of Roman Catholics, whereas Greek Catholics received a post-Jesuit church in Przemyśl on the grounds of Pope John Paul II’s decision (during his visit to Przemyśl in June 1991). What is important, the Catholic protesters were excommunicated. From 1996 the former post-Jesuit church became the cathedral of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Przemyśl-Warsaw as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The published accounts present the stands of both hierarchs of Przemyśl, Bishops Ignacy Tokarczuk and Jan Martyniak, and of several high representatives of the Bishops’ Curia and other RC offices involved directly in solving the dispute over the Carmelite church. All in all, in this issue half of the accounts come from the church circles. The Ukrainian side is represented by three accounts. However, there seem to be too few reports from politicians and high-ranking state officials, especially the defenders of the Carmelite church in Przemyśl themselves. There is also a separate report by a historian Stanisław Stępień, an active observer of and participant in the events in Przemyśl.

After the war was over, the situation of the Greek Catholic Church was particularly difficult, because the state authorities refused to recognize its legal personality and equal rights along with other churches. There has been issued a permit for its functioning to a limited extent, in condition of being represented by the Roman Catholic Church. Erection of each new GreekCatholic temple was possible only after obtaining permission from the Denomination Office. Limitations in access to religious practices, lasting for years, caused the worshippers to move to the Roman Catholic Church or to abandon the faith. The situation of the Greek Catholic Church could improve only after political transformation in Poland in the year 1989. After many years of limited pastoral activity, the hierarch started intensive actions in favour of the children and the youth to build and deepen their religious and national identity. In the first 20 years of political transformation there have been numerous events organized for the children and the youth, just as “Sareptas”, “Little Sareptas”, Festival of Children’s Sacral Art in Biały Bór and Górowo Iławeckie. In many Pomeranian parishes there have emerged children and youth artistic groups, musical bands and choirs, presenting their repertoire at various reviews and festivals in diocesan level, as well as elsewhere in the country. The Greek Catholic Church made also efforts to bring forward Ukrainian language, tradition and rituals in ways attractive for the childrenand the youth, for example: by organising football competitions, Christmas and Easter card contests, thematic workshops, Ukrainian Easter egg school oricon painting classes.

The article aims to review academic literature devoted to the Union of Brest and its followers, written between 1915 and 2022 by students and scholars associated with Warsaw. It includes major publications by alumni of universities and other higher education institutions in the capital of Poland, but also minor sketches (mostly unpublished) authored by Warsaw-based Greek Catholics. It explores the resurgence of scholarly interest in the Uniate question in the interwar period, its stagnation during the Polish People’s Republic, and its rekindling in the Third Polish Republic. It dwells on the realization that the authors’ viewpoint and the science policy of their employers - be it the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church or the Communist Party - was the determining factor in the works’ ideological skew. Another trend observed in the late 20th c. was that the religious affiliation of researchers and writers had lost its former significance mainly due to increasing privatization of religion.
XX
At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century a large group of Galician Ruthenians emigrated to North America and the United States and Canada, South America - mainly to Argentina and Brazil. Sheptytsky visited North America in 1910. He met with Ukrainian Greek Catholic immigrant communities in the United States and Canada. In 1921, he visited the USA and Canada again. In 1922 he arrived to Argentina and Brazil. He did not conduct open political agitation. However, some of his speeches have an anti-Polish character.

We wszystkich terminu ślubu wybierano zgodnie z rozkładem świąt i postów w roku liturgicznym.

This article aims to highlight aspects of religious life based on metrical records. The research focuses on religious communities in Rzeszów: the Roman Catholic parish of Farna, the Jewish metrical district, and the Greek Catholic parish in Zalesie. In all of these communities, the choice of wedding dates was in accordance with the liturgical calendar, including holidays and fasting periods. Illegitimate births indicated that relationships typical of marriage were also established before the formal wedding ceremony. Illegitimate births were more common among Jews due to marriages concluded only according to their own ritual. Illegitimate births were also more prevalent in the urban-like Farna parish compared to the rural Greek Catholic parish, where their percentage was the lowest. Records of administering sacraments to the dying were also indicative of religiousness.
