Selenium in plasma of inhabitants of the Gdansk Region

The aim of this study was: (a) to estimate the concentration of selenium in plasma of 136 residents (59 men and 77 women) of the Gdansk region, northern Poland, aged 19-70; and (b) to compare the obtained results with data corresponding to healtly populations living in different European countries. Selenium in plasma was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry using the hydride generation method. The mean selenium concentration in plasma of the investigated persons was: 72.3 +/- 14.1 mug/l, in men 75.9 +/- 12.8 mug/l, in women 69.5 +/- 14.7 mug/l. No age-dependent differences in plasma selenium were found in the investigated population. In 22% of the investigated persons the selenium level in plasma was lower than 60 mug/l. The obtained results indicate that a significant part of this population is deficient in selenium and should be supplemented with this element.

The deposition of acidifying compounds in Gdask region has been investigated. Bulk wet (in the open field), and throughfall (in the forest) stand, depositions were measured from 1994 till 2001. The deposition of sulphates, nitrates and ammonium salts has been analysed. The obtained results are compared with the critical deposition for sulphur and nitrogen related to the Gdask region. It has been stated that exceeding critical load was not observed for sulphur, while it was observed for nitrogen.

Concentrations and profiles of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), pentachlorobenzene (PCBz), hexachlorobenzene (HCBz), DDT and its metabolites (DDTs), tris(4-chlorophnyl)methane (TCPM-H), tris(4-chlorophnyl)methanol (TCPM-H), chlordane (CHLs), aldrin, dieldrin, isodrin, endrin, endosulfan 1, endosulfan 2, mirex, PCBs and PCNs were determined using isotopically labelled internal standards and HRGC/LRMS in sludge samples collected in 1999 from the sewage treatment plant in Dębogórze (city of Gdynia) and sediment samples taken in 1992 from the Vistula River and Gdańsk Depth in the Baltic Sea. DDT and its metabolites, PCBs, HCBz, dieldrin, CHLs and PCNs were quantified in one to all four samples examined, while PCBz, TCPM-H/OH, aldrin, isodrin, endrin, endosulfan 1 and 2, and mirex were not detected above the detection limit of the method. PCBs dominated among organochlorine compounds quantified in sludge samples while DDTs dominated in the sediment.

Metodą absorpcyjnej spektrometrii atomowej (ASA) oznaczono zawartość manganu, miedzi, cynku i żelaza w jadalnych liściach, łodygach i nadziemnych zgrubieniach łodygowych warzyw uprawianych na terenie woj. gdańskiego. Stężenia wymienionych metali w zbadanych warzywach liściastych wydawały się być typowe dla tych środków spożywczych.

Manganese, cooper, zinc and iron content of 24 species and varieties of leafy vegetables cultivated in the period of 1988 - 1989 in the region of Province of Gdańsk, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry after dry ashing and dissolving in 1N nitric acid. Results obtained seemed to be typical of the vegetables under investigation and were roughly comparable to those reported by the other authors with reference to the similar products cultivated in the central and southern regions of the country.
