Indian economy became more liberal in the 1990s which had an impact on Indian cinema. Film distribution and production changed into more international one, and Indian filmmakers began working in the landscape dominated by new, globalized media. Satellite television entering the market in India and greater availability of Bollywood and Hollywood films changed the audience. Its structure and expectations were different from now on. Martyna Olszowska in Dirty Dancing to the Bolly Rhythm. Bollywood Remakes of the Hollywood Hits analyses an issue of Bollywood remakes based on American productions, considering varying audiences, differences between cultures and styles, changes in the society, and the aim of doing a remake. She claims that present Bollywood remakes of mostly Hollywood hits are the result of globalization and internationalization of contemporary Indian cinema, and the producers’ attempt at reaching a broader audience, not only Indian filmgoers. Olszowska compares Emile Ardolino’s Dirty Dancing (1987) and Pooja Bhatt’s Holiday (2006) referring to the theory of remakes and changes that have recently occurred in Indian society, culture, film policy and cinema audience.
