Purpose: Based on the resource-based view theory, environmental uncertainty perspective, and causal complexity in firms, this study aims to identify the causal pathways of organizational resources, dynamic capabilities and technological uncertainty leading to digital transformation from a holistic perspective. Design/methodology/approach: Considering the gap in the existing literature on the configuration of internal and external factors affecting digital transformation, this study conducts a set-theoretic analysis using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA). The fs/QCA focuses on the effects of causal conditions that allow for more detailed discovery and understanding of the causal mechanisms of digital transformation. Thirty-three manufacturing SMEs were selected and fs/QCA was used to explore how companies can engage resources and dynamic capabilities to achieve digital transformation in the face of a highly uncertain external environment. Findings: As the research shows, both high and low levels of digital maturity can be achieved through various pathways of causal conditions. There is synergy between technological uncertainty and relational and portfolio technological resources or between technological uncertainty and sensing and seizing capabilities that can jointly promote digital transformation. Research limitations/implications: The analysis is based on a limited number of cases. In order to generalize the results, a larger sample from multiple industries can be collected and analyzed, thus refining the findings and increasing the level of universality. Future research should also be extended to different levels and theoretical perspectives to analyze the different factors influencing digital transformation. Practical implications: According to the research, managers should avoid "one size fits all" strategies and follow a pathway based on their resources and capabilities, especially dynamic to promote digital transformation or analyze environmental changes, as the digital era is inextricably linked to a high degree of technological uncertainty. Originality/value: This research enhances understanding of the interdependence of causal conditions (i.e. organizational resources, dynamic capabilities and technological uncertainty) in established relationships with the outcome - the level of digital maturity. It also provides implications for the digital transformation of manufacturing SMEs.(original abstract)

Purpose: Systematization of knowledge in the field of defining and occurrence of key activities that make up the overall concept of digital transformation with an indication of the key stages of its implementation. In addition, the aim of the article is also to conduct a comparative analysis of selected models of digital transformation in terms of a number of criteria, such as: the degree of concentration of the model on the selected sector of the economy, the degree of concentration on digital competences, the degree of focus on management concepts, the degree of concentration on digital transformation tools, the degree of focus on the digital maturity of the organization. Design/methodology/approach: The objectives of the article were achieved through an in-depth analysis of the literature on the subject in the field of models of digital transformation emphasizing the stages of its course. The article presents a comparative analysis of models selected in preliminary studies developed by consulting companies and models created as a result of research works by other scientists. Findings: The authors of the article compared the existing models of digital transformation and suggested the need to develop a new model using the partial advantages of the compared models. The authors also indicated a gap in the need to implement a component emphasizing the importance of managing resistance to changes in the organization. Originality/value: The originality of the article consists in drawing a conclusion in the form of a suggestion of the need to develop work in the field of modeling the digital transformation process in the context of the theory of organizational change, with particular emphasis on key competences, focus on methods and resistance to changes in an organization wishing to go through the digital transformation process. When education across all levels, is no exception for meeting the needs of industry 4.0 and the new demand of the digital economy and society, distributed leadership is an effective reform strategy for organization's transition to digital transformation. 174 articles related to distributed leadership were selected from eight core-international journals in the field of educational leadership and management with an average h-index of 45, and 64 articles with the keywords of distributed leadership published in the CSSCI and core journals were found. The 248 articles in total were reviewed for analysis with three aspects (research themes and theories; research methodology and analytical methods; discovery and revelation) which were synthesized from the systematic conceptual framework of literature review by Hallinger (2013,2014), the research conclusion frameworks by Bennett et al. (2003) and Tian et al. (2016). The literature review was conducted on four aspects (who, why, what and how) for knowing which most scholars are concerned and for informing educational institutions with insights on distributed leadership for future development.(original abstract)

Purpose: The aim of the paper is (1) to analyze the DARQ (Distributed ledger, Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality, Quantum Computing) technology in terms of its implementations and (2) to compare these technologies with the SMAC technology (Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud). We present the thesis that DARQ technologies can help in building information systems aimed at both predicting and monitoring global crises. We argue that the DARQ technology will support the management of network organizations in the first period of development. Design/methodology/approach: The research procedure consists of the following steps: literature analysis, conducting qualitative research and its presentation, obtaining expert opinions and recommendations for further research. Findings: The results of work on the DARQ technology that supports management systems allowed for the evaluation of usability both in terms of the expected effects and the areas of risk of application. Research limitations/implications: Due to the lack of practical applications of all the elements that make up the DARQ technology, the analysis of such components as Extended Reality (Virtual Reality), Quantum Computing (Virtual Computing Technology) is not complete and requires complementary research and a more complete analysis of its applications. We consider the presented work as an introduction to broader research. Originality/value: The thesis has been substantiated that the transition from SMAC to DARQ technology can be done gradually. Both of these technologies are compatible. This may result in gradual and collision-free changes in the quality of the management system. Elements of the new DARQ technology, such as Distributed ledger, Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality and Quantum computing, allow for abrupt changes in both the management system and the functioning of the organization. Already today, each component of the DARQ technology has a significant impact on various sectors of the economy. However, it should be noted that apart from the positives, the DARQ technology also poses some threats. The article contains conclusions from the research and indicates a recommendation for further work, which concerns extending the application of DARQ technology to predict and monitor disasters and unpredictable events. To this end, we analyze the Black Swan theory (based on the COVID-19 pandemic case study) as the theoretical framework for the use of DARQ technology as a tool to reduce the occurrence of unpredictable events.(original abstract)

Wnioski - Opis zmiany stosunków społecznych w krajach rozwiniętych czerpie z uznanych publikacji Davida Riesmana, Jeremy'ego Rifkina i Shoshany Zuboff. Purpose - Digital transformation offers new media of social communication. Starting from this point, the article asks whether this means a chance of survival or development of a new society, and by doing so it refers to 'quantified theory of behaviour' by Alex Pentland. Or, presumably, it opens enormous space for invigilation and social manipulation. Research method - This is a review of literature based on Alex Pentland's publications, and referring to works of David Riesman, Jeremy Rifkin and Shoshana Zuboff. Results - Rather than on technical and systemic issues, the emphasis has been put on a fundamental transformation of social relations, which occurred in the developed countries prior to the digital transformation taking place at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. Originality / value / implications / recommendations - This transformation was discovered and described by outstanding authors like David Riesman, Jeremy Rifkin and Shoshana Zuboff. The review of their ideas concludes that digital culture makes existing institutional structures based on agreement weaker while making the inclination to instrumental and amoral re-building of the collective order stronger. Implikacje i rekomendacje: W artykule omówiono rosnące znaczenie sztucznej inteligencji w różnych uwarunkowaniach społeczno-gospodarczych.

Aim: The aim of the paper was twofold. Firstly, to identify and define the European Union's approach to Artificial Intelligence from the territorial perspective. The main aim was achieved through a detailed analysis of the EU strategic documents evoking regional and urban aspects of AI. Secondly, the significance of Digital Innovation Hubs as a key AI European policy instrument was assessed In this paper, the author tried to answer the following research question: to what extent are the Digital Innovation Hubs a key policy instrument of the European Union's approach to AI from a territorial perspective? Methodology: Literature review, desk research and text analysis (for EU strategic documents related to AI from the period 2018-onwards) are used as research methods in this paper. Results: The results show that the territorial dimension of AI, especially in the context of the EU strategic documents, has only been discussed to a limited extent. However, there are indeed some EU initiatives with a focus on AI, or to a large degree - their digital aspects. It is the case of Digital Innovation Hubs being an instrument to strengthen SMEs' competitive position and boost their digital transformation combining a regional dimension. Implications and recommendations: The paper builds upon the growing importance of AI in different socio-economic contexts. However, in the EU strategic documents related to AI, this issue has been discussed only to a small extent. DIHs and EDIHs are indicated as a main tool of the EU policy to deploy digital services (and AI-related services specifically) to companies in a regional dimension. The paper suggests to continue assessing the importance of DIHs and especially EDIHs in this context. The challenge of digital transformation is huge for companies in the EU (according to the Digital Decade targets set for 2030 the AI take-up is 11% of enterprises in 2023 against 75% of enterprises targeted for 2030 (European Commission, 2023), and EDIHs are expected to be a main actor boosting this process in the EU context. Originality/value: The paper builds upon the territorial dimension of the EU's approach to AI based on the EU strategic documents which is new in the literature. Moreover, it gives an extended overview of the DIHs and EDIHs programme in the context of AI, also suggesting fields for further research.(original abstract)

Purpose: The main purpose of this research was to investigate what key outcomes of the new digital technologies are observed in selected manufacturing enterprises in Poland and what changes in organization and management area should be realized to support the digital transformation strategy. Design/methodology/approach: To illuminate this uncharted field, the individual in-depth interviews with the selected management experts with extensive experience and practice in industry were tested and their interesting observations and recommendations for top managers and scientists were identified. Findings: The findings from the study indicated that one of the primary effect of the digital transformation is a possibility to process and analyze a huge amount of data in real-time. This gives many significant benefits revealed in this study. One of them is shortening time and an increase quality of decision-making process. These results can provide meaningful insights for subsequent research towards designing new methods and tools for business management using advanced digital technologies. Research limitations/implications: The first limitation is that this research focuses on Polish manufacturing enterprises, but it does not include a division into different type of industry sectors. Therefore, it was not possible to identify changes specific for each kind of sector. A second limitation is associated with the qualitative research which was conducted to identify new changes and cannot lead to the elimination of changes with marginal importance and indicate the most important ones. The quantitative research could bring interesting results and indicate which changes are significant. Practical implications: These research results established a solid basis towards the development of new solutions, business models and methods by answering the question about what should be changed in manufacturing enterprises in digital transformation environment for their own betterment. Originality/value: The article addresses the need for conducting research to develop a new approach, new perspectives and trends in business organization and management so far lacking in the scientific literature. The presented results of in-depth interviews with experts contributes to descriptive and explanatory knowledge on the influence of digital transformation on organization and management areas in manufacturing enterprises.(original abstract)

Purpose: This academic paper addresses the impact of cyberattacks on companies, employees, and customers, particularly in the context of increased digitalization due to the pandemic. It emphasizes the importance of the human factor in cybersecurity and proposes the need for a universal tool to measure threat perception and behaviour tendencies. The paper aims to expand knowledge in measuring employee exposure to cyberthreats, especially in remote and hybrid work, by presenting methodology, findings and applications. Research Background: In recent years, cybersecurity has gained significant attention, with a surge in published articles focusing on technical aspects and the human factor. However, there is a research gap regarding potentially dangerous behaviour among employees in remote or hybrid work models. Understanding individual differences in perceptions of cybersecurity is crucial for identifying vulnerabilities and enhancing corporate cyber resilience. Methods: A qualitative pilot study was conducted to create the "Employees' Exposure to Cyberthreats Scale" based on interviews with cybersecurity professionals. The scale was then validated through a survey study with a representative sample of remote employees (N = 563). The questionnaire employed an expectancy approach, assessing severity and probability of unsafe behaviours on a 5-point scale. Findings & Value Added: This paper presents the development and validation of a cyber exposure scale, measuring general and specific categories of cyberexposure. Three behaviour categories emerged: environmental, credential-related, and behavioural. The study provides preliminary results and practical implications for organizations to enhance cyber resilience, emphasizing the importance of employee behaviour and attitudes for cybersecurity practices. The findings contribute to tailored security policies and the development of a cybersecurity-focused organizational culture. Originality/value: This research addresses a gap in the current cybersecurity literature by focusing on the behaviors and perceptions of employees in remote and hybrid work models, an area which has seen increased relevance due to the pandemic-induced shift to digital platforms. Introducing the 'Employee Cyber Threat Exposure Scale', this paper provides a tool to measure individual differences, offering organisations insights to strengthen their cyber resilience. Purpose: In the era of digital transformation, organizational knowledge becomes even more important than before in building the competitive advantage of enterprises (Malerba et al., 2020; Santorno et al., 2018; Chen et al., 2023). Digital transformation forces companies to rethink knowledge resources to meet current requirements. Design/methodology/approach: The research methods consist of a comprehensive and systematic domestic and foreign literature review of organizational knowledge definitions, taxonomies, and metaphors in a digital transformation environment. Findings: The development of companies in a dynamic, competitive business environment with digital transformation is altering the way knowledge is perceived within organizations and requires a new approach to understanding knowledge assets and their formation. Research limitations/implications: The research should continue on the relationship between digital transformation and knowledge processes in the organization (acquisition, generation, storage, sharing, and transfer). Practical implications: The research results prove that an adequate understanding of organizational knowledge, its taxonomy, and the right choice of metaphors guide efforts on knowledge creation in organizations in a digital transformation environment. Originality/value: The research contributes to organizational knowledge management and sheds light on how knowledge metaphor analysis contributes to diagnosing situations and finding solutions that contribute to an organization's potential. Climate change, urban sprawl, a global pandemic, and the general trend of digitizing economies are driving the need for digital transformation of utilities. Policymakers of industry digital transformation need some aggregated metric that captures the essence of this multidimensional concept, identifies the pros and cons of current policies, and guides future directions based on cross-country benchmarking. This study develops the Industry Digital Transformation Index for the utility industry (IDTIu) as a composite indicator. IDTIu provides an aggregate score for the digital transformation of the national utility industry based on 31 indicators grouped into 8 sub-indices. IDTIu scores were calculated for 34 European countries based on 2020 data. To avoid the methodological challenges of equal weighting and expert assessments, we applied the original Benefit-of-the-Doubt (BoD) model and its two extensions for the proportion and priority of sub- indices. Our results show that (i) the full flexibility of the original BoD model leads to the expected deficiencies in ranking leaders and assigning zeros to insignificant sub-indices; (ii) BoD model with ordinal sub-index share restrictions does not allow ranking of laggards when IoT, AI, and BDA are ranked as top 3 priorities. Therefore, at the current stage of the digital transformation of utilities, we recommend the BoD model with proportional sub-index share restrictions. (original abstract)

Purpose: Technological changes determined by the development of Industry 4.0 significantly change the business models of modern organizations. The Covid-19 pandemic is also influencing changing organizational systems and dynamic progress in technological transformation. The main purpose of the paper is to present the impact of digital transformation on changes in business models and to answer the question if Covid-19 will accelerate change. Design/methodology/approach: The paper contains the literature review on business model concept, Industry 4.0, Digital Transformation and Covid-19. In this paper the empirical study is also presented. The main research problem was to determine the impact of the digital transformation (technological progress) following the Covid-19 pandemic on changes in the business models of Polish enterprises and public sector institutions. Findings: A research confirmed that the digital transformation (processes connected with digitization, automation, robotization and artificial intelligence) resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the business models of both Polish enterprises and public sector institutions. The research also confirmed a discrepancy between the opinions of experts and management when it came to assessing the impact of technological progress associated with Covid-19 on the business models of the surveyed organizations. Originality/value: The presented work is an important contribution when it comes to the post- pandemic economic reality. Paper assesses the impact of technological progress induced by Covid-19 on changes in the functioning of individual processes, which can be an important guide for management practitioners, helpful in implementing modern technological solutions in organizations. Research background: In the digital era, digital transformation has become a strategic imperative for leadership agenda. Many firms have accelerated their pace in digital transformation to improve their performance and competitiveness. Despite increasing attention in the literature on the role of digital transformation in firms' operations, understanding the effect of digital transformation on corporate finance remains limited. This study focuses on cash holdings, which are essential for firms to survive and thrive.Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to examine the critical role of digital transformation on the cash holdings of listed firms in China and provide micro evidence regarding the economic consequences of the digital economy from firm level. This study also aims to deepen our understanding of the influence of digital transformation on firms' operation and financial policy. Additionally, this paper attempts to provide relevant guidance for implementing policies to promote digital transformation and devise corresponding cash holding strategies. Methods: The text analysis method is used to measure the degree of digital transformation of China's A-share listed companies. The sample covers 19,337 observations from 2007-2020. A multiple regression model with firm and year fixed effect is developed to investigate the relationship between digital transformation and corporate cash holdings. In the robustness test, this paper substitutes the independent and dependent variables, and adopts instrumental variable estimation method. In the mechanism test, this paper uses the sub-sample regression method in the mechanism test.Findings & value added: This study reveals that digital transformation can significantly reduce corporate cash holdings by alleviating the precautionary motive, agency motive and transaction motive of cash holdings. Further analysis shows that the negative effect of digital transformation on cash holdings is more profound in high-tech firms and non-state-owned enterprises. The methodology applied in this paper can be used in other economic research of firms. This study provides insights into the effects of digital transformation on corporate financial policy. This provides a solution for reducing firms' cash holdings. This study also deepens the understanding of digital transformation from a corporate perspective. (original abstract)

Purpose. Digital transformation in the global sport industry has resulted in digitally focused business strategies, innovative business models, targeted social media marketing strategies, increased consumer, and sponsor demand, accelerated growth in women's sports, and streaming media (OTT) worldwide. This paper aims to study the case of the U.S.-based National Basketball Association's (NBA) digital transformation, including multiple interactions of actors in the digital transformation process. A key aim is understanding the synergies resulting from the league's integration of digital technologies, its business strategy, the evolution of its hybrid business model and the increase in revenue and global branding. Design/methodology/approach. An explanatory case study design was selected to examine the NBA's integration of digital technologies, digital and social media marketing strategies, business model innovation, multimedia partnerships, and strategic sponsorships. Data was derived from: (1) academic journals; (2) research based white papers; (3) sport industry reports and periodicals; (4) selected sport industry websites; and (5) recorded interviews with selected NBA officials. Gleaned content was analysed with a theory-oriented triangulation approach. The study period was from 2000 to 2023. Findings. The NBA's digital transformation, led by an entrepreneurial management team contributed to a successful business strategy aimed at engaging with digitally focused consumers across multiple media channels. The NBA developed an ecosystem-based consumer-focused hybrid business model, content-focused digital assets, and partnerships with media, brands, and cultural events. Its media partnerships and strategic sponsorships are synergistic with its business and marketing objectives, digital initiatives, and acquisitions. By the 2017-2018 season, the NBA had validated its position as a successful global entertainment property. Originality/value. This paper examined the NBA's digital transformation, including how the league integrated digital technologies with its business strategy and model to increase revenue and create a global brand. The analysis examined how the NBA's digital transformation facilitated the league's business strategy, enhanced the NBA fan experience, generated revenue from innovative digital products and services, and transformed its business model. The NBA's business strategy and hybrid business model provide an exemplar for professional teams, leagues, and federations worldwide seeking to digitally transform their enterprises.(original abstract)

Purpose - In recent years we have seen major technological advancements including the launch of large language models such as ChatGPT and the popularity of the digital transformation topic among professionals and academics. Despite this, the pace of digital transformation is surprisingly slow. We aimed to identify behavioral antecedents of an organization's sluggish digital transformation. Design/methodology/approach - We adopted the organizational level of analysis, which differs from prior analyses of technological revolutions that looked at the phenomenon from an aggregate labor market or society level of analysis. Findings - We identified dehumanization as a key construct useful in examining the behavioral impediments to digital transformation. We indicated that the traditionally dual understanding of dehumanization needs to incorporate the actual involvement of non-human agents in operational and decision-making processes in organizations. Originality/value - We complemented the predominant approach of digital transformation, which focuses on technology and related business model development, with a behavioral approach. We considered digital transformation as an extreme degree of change, similar to the Industrial Revolution. We paved the way for the conceptual development of dehumanization in the digital world and for developing managerial practices useful in alleviating concerns that impede the pace of digital transformation.
