Language can be modelled in various ways, highlighting either its social or systemic character. The author assumes that language is a normative phenomenon enabling speakers to communicate. At any particular time language is used, however, we are capable of determining the function which maps the expressions produced using this language to their meanings. In this contribution the author proposes a functional model of language in a synchronic sense. This model also resolves various complications with ambivalence, etc. Further, he also proposes a model of language in a diachronic sense as a function from possible worlds and time instants to languages in a synchronic sense. Thus the intuitive idea of language as a changing entity is captured. Both models are constructed to be the tools serving mainly the investigation of semantic properties of expressions of that language.

The article presents the sixth version of the Corpus of Historical Slovak marked as hist-6.0. The Corpus of Historical Slovak is a diachronic corpus of Slovak texts from the pre-codification period. It contains both project’s transliterated texts from photocopies of the original texts, as well as printed texts preserving the original orthography. Preparation of the current version started in autumn 2020. The article describes three areas of conceptual development of this corpus version, namely: 1. adding of new texts, 2. unification of the rules for text transliteration and 3. unification of existing tagging.

The article presents the structure of the Corpus of Historical Slovak – a diachronic corpus of written Slovak texts predating language standardization attempts (texts from the 15th to the 18th century). The content of the corpus is based predominantly on existing published transcribed manuscripts, in this sense it is an opportunistic corpus, aiming to collect primarily existing texts; but we also collect and transcribe some documents directly, in order to improve the chronological balance of the corpus. The corpus aims for historical accuracy captured orthography-wise, but given existing standards in transcribing historical Slovak, this was not always possible with complete accuracy.
