The published article analyses the plundering site in the ancient world warfare. During the expeditions, the grain fields were the main object of interest of the troops in the first place. The plunderers not only used them as their own supply, but we can also see efforts to devastate the hinterland of the enemy side behind their subsequent habitual destruction, which also constituted the usual framework of coercion in an attempt to make them submit or to challenge their army to a direct confrontation. Last but not least, interventions in the water regime of rivers or canals could have had a similar effect, in order to prevent enemy movement by flooding their surroundings.

The article is devoted to the problem of the preservation and restoration of objects of cultural heritage – monuments and museum collections – in the conditions of war. The article’s analysis is supplemented by a brief overview of how mankind has approached the protection of its material cultural heritage in historical times. According to data verified by UNESCO, as of November 21, 2022, 218 sites have been damaged in Ukraine since the start of the war on February 24, including 95 religious sites, 17 museums, 78 buildings of historical and/or artistic significance, 18 monuments and 10 libraries. The experience of the ongoing Russian–Ukrainian war has once again proven the insecurity of cultural heritage sites and museums in the face of conflict. The authors analysed the Ukrainian experience of protecting monuments, the effectiveness of these efforts, and various ways of preserving the cultural heritage of peoples during wars. The discussion closes with conclusions on possible remedies for the destruction of material cultural objects in Ukraine.

The article deals with three groups of issues, which are closely interrelated. The main problem discussed is the issue of the reconstruction, revalorisation and protection of Ukrainian monuments exposed to destruction as a result of warfare and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The second issue presented is the experience of Polish conservators in the area of cities destroyed during World War II. The third issue is international legislation in the field of heritage protection, which was analysed for the planned activities in the area of reconstruction and revaluation of Ukrainian monuments after the end of the war. The above-mentioned research was carried out by the Polish-Ukrainian team of heritage conservators, which seeks to be involved in the process of saving Ukrainian cultural heritage.

The essay reveals the relationship between Heidegger’s thinking and the nature of dancing with regard to his lecture Building Dwelling Thinking. In it Heidegger provides an inspiring illustration of the bridge: “The bridge swings over the stream with ease and power”; “even where the bridge covers the stream, it holds its flow up to the sky by taking it for a moment under the vaulted gateway and then setting it free once more.” Such an easy and powerful movement of the bridge reflects the dynamics of Heidegger’s own thinking, particularly the way in which his phenomenological method of destruction takes up the traditional philosophical concepts and attempts to set them free again.
