The article contains a review of Marinela Mladenova’s book Банатски български книжовен език в контекста на славянската микролингвистика. История, динамика на нормата и езикови политики, the author of which focuses on the normalization and development of the language norms of the Bulgarian minority living in Banat. The literary language of the Banat Bulgarians has the status of an island language because it has been used by the Catholic community for over two hundred years living outside their homeland, in a foreign linguistic environment. It developed its own literary norm through time, mostly under the influence of Croatian, Romanian, and Hungarian, and is now regarded a micro-language. Marinela Mladenowa’s book, as well as the accompanying article, discuss the political and societal reasons that influenced the development of this standard.

Artykuł zwiera recenzję książki Marineli Mladenovej Банатски български книжовен език в контекста на славянската микролингвистика. История, динамика на нормата и езикови политики, której autorka skupia się na normalizacji i rozwoju norm języka bułgarskiej mniejszości zamieszkującej Banat. Literacki język Bułgarów z Banatu ma status języka wyspowego, gdyż posługuje się nim katolicka społeczność od ponad dwustu lat żyjąca poza ojczyzną, w obcym otoczeniu językowym. Z czasem – w dużej mierze pod wpływem języka chorwackiego, rumuńskiego i węgierskiego – rozwinął własną normę literacką i uznawany jest dziś za mikrojęzyk. Książka Marineli Mladenowej, a w ślad za nią także niniejszy artykuł dotyczą czynników politycznych i społecznych, które oddziaływały na rozwój tej normy.

The core of this contribution is an annotated translation for the Czech settlement of Banat – or, more precisely, for the settlement of Banat from the Czech lands – key chapters in the book Ethnographie der oesterreichischen Monarchie (1857) authored by Karl Czoernig, Baron of Černousy (Karl Czoernig Freiherr von Czernhausen). This concerns chapter § 53. Böhmische (cechische) Colonien in der Militärgränze, which deals with the very beginnings of the corresponding colonization processes. The translation is preceded by a biographical sketch of K. Czoernig, which recapitulates the most important moments in the life of this remarkable personality, and it’s supplemented with his selected bibliography and an outline of the development of the study of the Czech settlement of Banat, taking into account the impact of the disappearing linguistic competences of the researchers. The publication of an annotated translation of this source aims to contribute to the long-term interest in the Czech settlement of Banat by providing a Czech version of this key source to those to whom it would otherwise remain inaccessible.

This study is dedicated to the interpretation of the history of the community Svatá Helena (Sf. Elena), founded in the 1820s by the colonists from the Czech Lands. The study interprets the religious history of the community throughout the nineteenth century, determined in the first place by the multiconfessional environment and popular religiosity. Such local milieu offered ideal conditions for the origin of specific forms of popular devoutness. In case of Svatá Helena, earlier research led to a thesis that presented the local non-Catholic inhabitants as bearers of the tradition of sectarianism that arose in Eastern Bohemia at the times of the Patent of Toleration (1781). This sectarian tradition was characterized by a deep individual religiosity based on the individual interpretation of the Holy Scripture as well as direct relation to the symbolic Universe without mediation of any type of Church. The present study, however, refutes this „sectarian thesis“ and proves the need to find another interpretations, based on consistent analysis of primary sources and literature. Such new interpretation rebuts the earlier generalizations and enables deeper understanding of the religious history of Svatá Helena, but also the problem of confessionally delineated popular groups in general. Besides, it discloses wider, as yet unexplored perspective of the missionary movement Free Reformed Church and the abstinence movement Blue Cross. The resulting religious disunion within the Evangelical community was caused precisely by this religious activity that was related to the revival movement within nineteenth-century Protestantism. In the conclusion of the article, the author remarks that the missionary activities of Blue Cross movement were not exclusively focused to the community Svatá Helena, but should be evaluated in the wider context of religious situation in South-Eastern Europe.

In interwar Romania, non-political institutions played a decisive role in the process of containing the expansion of totalitarian ideologies. The two major colliding ideological forces, National Socialism and Communism, rapidly reshaped the European sociopolitical profile after World War I and caused an unprecedented long-term deterioration of various intergovernmental relations. The Banat region was systematically exposed to external ideological factors due to the fact that its heterogeneous ethno-cultural profile allowed a rapid proliferation of political ideas and programs.

The basis of this paper is an annotated translation of the first key sections of Gedenk-Buch der Pfarre Weitzenried. Im K. K. Illirisch-Banater Grenz-regiments- Bezirke No. 14 (1853). This work by František Unzeitig, the first parish priest in Gârnic [Gerník in Czech] is a source on the Czech settlement of Banat, or on the settlement of Banat from the Czech lands that was translated by Václav Mašek, a prominent figure in the Czech community in Banat who served as the parish priest in Gârnic from 1977–1999. The selection from the translation is preceded by a commentary on the circumstances in which the translation, which was written in the late 1970s, was created. The text is accompanied by continuous clarifying and explanatory notes. The publication of the annotated translation of Pamětní kniha gernické fary is intended as a contribution to the long-standing interest in the Czech settlement of Banat by providing the Czech version of this key source for all those to whom it would otherwise remain inaccessible.

The text represents another contribution in the series of articles on Vojvodovo, the Czech village in Bulgaria, published in recent years. The author attempts to answer the question in his analysis why so many Vojvodovo Czech Protestants chose as their marriage partners inhabitants of a nearby village of Bărdarski Geran, both Banat Bulgarians (Paulicians) and Banat Swabians. In both villages religion was perhaps the most important organizational principle, religious endogamy being one of its main rules. One would expect absence of intermarriage between Vojvodovo and Bărdarski Geran for this reason; the opposite, however, was the case. The author shows that the reason why members of both communities felt a kind of mutual affinity was culture, as both groups shared many cultural traits. One of these cultural traits was deep and genuine religiosity, perhaps better expressed as belief. So, although at first sight religiosity (in the form of their creeds) would seem to prevent any closer contacts developing between the two communities, it actually is religiosity (as belief) that stands behind the surprising and unexpected number of marriages that took place between members of the two local communities.
