The occurrence of relics from the Roman era in graves from the period of the Avar Kaganate is not an exceptional phenomenon. Often, they were found in graves at burial grounds from this period in the former territory of the Roman province of Pannonia. Some of these burials were located near or even directly on the sites of former ancient centres. Mostly small metal objects were found, such as buckles, various fittings, keys, etc., which rarely served their original purpose. Among the special objects of Roman-provincial origin in graves from the period of the Avar Kaganate are ceramic vessels. A total of 12 such vessels from six burial sites come from the territory of today’s Slovakia. From the point of view of the range and origin of Roman ceramic vessels, it can be concluded that the egg-shaped jugs made of finely floated, well-fired clay of yellow or orange-yellow colour with a narrow neck, with a slightly or only slightly open mouth, a straight, widened rim and one handle dominate. It can be assumed that the mentioned vessels, which mainly belong to the older Roman period, come from robbed graves, or tombs, especially in the territory of such centres as Carnuntum, Gerulata, or Brigetio. From the overview of contexts with the occurrence of ceramics from the Roman period, it is clear that they are found in graves regardless of the age and gender of the buried person. The appearance of ceramics from the Roman period in graves from the Avar Kaganate period is a significant phenomenon. It is similar to putting in the graves the so-called antique objects, which have rather the function of a kind of amulet, or ‘antiquated’ object.

In 2017, a burial site destroyed by forestry works was discovered in Závod (Malacky dist.). Burials took place here mainly in the 2nd and the first half of the 3rd century. Among the finds from the second half of the 2nd century (B2/C1), artefacts of foreign provenance are numerously represented. They have parallels in the areas north of the Central Danube Barbaricum, especially in the burial sites of the Przeworsk culture. Whether this is evidence of long-distance trade, cultural influence or minor ethnic movements is a matter of debate.

In autumn of 2005 in the area of and archival grave-field at Stabłowice site 1 in Wrocław (Figs. 1-3) new graves of Lusatian Culture were discovered, in Tatrzańska street, during a rescue excavation run due to renovation of the road. The site was discovered during the 19th century and partly investigated in early 20th century. From this fieldwork we now have only a part of the site documentation held by the city archive. Two graves discovered during the rescue excavation were urned burials with a number of accessory vessels (Figs. 6-7). Analysis of the bone remains identified one of the burials as an adult of undetermined identified gender. Analysis of the ceramic vessels, on the other hand, confirmed that the spot was used as a burial site during a later segment of the Bronze Age and during the Early Iron Age.

The study deals with the assessment of the archaeological source fund from the early Magyar equestrian burial site from the 10th century in Čierna nad Tisou (Trebišov district), which was saved as early as in 1951. So far this material has been known only from a short information report by J. Pástor. The unique finds of the observed set include a double-edged sword of the U-type and an amphora with cylindrical neck decorated with plastic ribs. The saved artefacts from Čierna nad Tisou belonged probably to the members of the first two generations of early Magyar population represented by military elite of a prince´s suite with the closest family, relatives and servants. The end of burying in the site may be associated with the transfer of grand princes´ centre during the second half of the 10th century to the west, probably to the area between the present Buda, Székesfehérvár and Esztergom.

The contribution concerns the burial inventories of the graves 13, 39 and 62 from the La Tene burial site of Maňa. The women graves are dated back to the beginning of the phase LT B1. In the inventories of these graves there is notable a strong influence from the western-La Tene environment, the clue to which is not only jewellery, which is clearly imported, but mainly models of annular ring forms, i.e. the combination of the adorning rings to the body of the buried woman. In the mentioned three graves it was possible to define two models of annular ring forms “Maňa 62/13” (pat tern 3-1) and “Maňa 39” (pattern 5-4), while the distributional analysis shows their western origin.

Scorrione-West, dated to 4th – 6th centuries AD, represents a unique site, both archaeologically and methodologically. Archaeological material suggests intermingling of various cultural groups. The presented report aims to add more data regarding the human aspect at Scorrione. It provides initial findings and results of anthropological analysis of the human remains excavated at the site during the season 2020 – 2021. Minimum number of excavated individuals was 16. In graves from the inner cave, young and prime-age adults, both males and females, were buried, all younger than 40 years of age. All but one grave contained the remains of more than one individual, even though flooding may have played a role. In Grave 40, five individuals with no apparent relation with each other were buried, probably not at the same time. The results of macroscopically osteological analysis appear to be consistent with archaeological data suggesting mostly hard-working individuals and the presence of multiple cultural groups, even though the 16 individuals do not necessarily represent the whole community.

This paper attempts a supra-regional approach to the Middle-Danube Tumulus culture problem on the basis of the inhumation burial from Oberdürnbach, which shows the variability of burial in the crouched position in the Middle-Danube Tumulus culture, the settlement in Veselé, where bronzes and casting moulds from the pits prove the continuity of the settlement by the Maďarovce culture and the Middle-Danube Tumulus culture, and the burial site in Dunaújváros, where the pottery proves the contacts of this culture with the Vatya culture.
