The Eurasian otter Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758) is a typical representative of carnivorous mammals from the family of mustelids (Mustelidae) which are closely connected with aquatic ecosystems. Parasitofauna of the otter is poorly identified, e.g. only two specimens have been examined in Poland for the presence of parasites. Currently, three species of parasites were found in one otter: the nematode Oswaldocruzia filiformis (Goeze, 1782), the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus ranae (Schrank, 1788) and the skin mite from the Demodecidae family. Demodex sp. is a new species to science, while O. filiformis and Demodex sp. are new parasites for the otter throughout the species range. Furthermore, A. ranae was found for the first time in the otter from the area of Poland. The recorded helminths are typical parasites of amphibians and reptiles, and their occurrence in the Eurasian otter may result from postcyclic transmission from primary hosts.

Specimens of the fishes Rastrelliger kanagurta (Scombridae) and Siganus luridus (Siganidae) were caught in the Red Sea off the coast of Sharm El-Sheikh, South Sinai, Egypt. R. kanagurta was parasitised by Diplosentis nudus (Harada, 1938) Pichelin et Cribb, 2001 (Acanthocephala, Cavisomidae), and S. luridus by Sclerocollum rubrimaris Schmidt et Paperna, 1978 (Acanthocephala, Cavisomidae). The infection of R. kanagurta was followed monthly for one year (from September, 2004 to August, 2005). As a result, the seasonal cycle of D. nudus in its definitive host is described herein for the first time. The cycle is well-defined and extends for about 11 months (from October to August); in October, new generation of D. nudus starts to appear in the intestine of R. kanagurta; during the winter, the juvenile worms continued their growth; during the spring, most of the worms attained maturity and the mature worms copulated; during the summer, the worms began to die off naturally prior to their elimination from the intestine of the host. Sclerocollum rubrimaris is redescribed and Sclerocollum Schmidt et Paperna, 1978 is retained as a valid genus within the Cavisomidae.

Background. The hitherto published records of the parasite fauna of Baltic cod, Gadus morhua callarias cover commercially-caught adult fish. The aim of this study was to determine the composition of the parasite fauna of young Baltic cod, the relevant infection parameters and to relate those data to published records on the diet of cod. Materials and Methods. This survey was carried out on 154 young cod, caught in May and June 2002 in the Gulf of Puck, the Baltic Sea, Poland. The fish were examined using standard methods applied in parasitology. Results. No external parasites were found. In the digestive tracts of 58 cod, 3 species of parasites belonging to 2 higher taxa (Nematoda and Acanthocephala) were found. The dominant parasite was Echinorhynchus gadi Zoega in Müller, 1776. The mean abundance ranged from 0.15 to 2.75. The prevalence ranged from 14.6%, in the smallest fish, to 66.7% in the larger ones. Only two acanthocephalan specimens of Pomphorhynchus laevis (Zoega in Müller, 1776) and five nematode larvae of Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) were found. Conclusion. The parasite fauna of young Baltic cod is significantly sparser than in larger fish examined by other authors. It is suggested that the occurrence of the species found, can be related to the composition of diet available.

The present study is the first record of acanthocephalan parasites in fish of the genus Hippocampus and of the order Syngnathiformes. It also provides the first reference to Corynosoma australe in fish from San Matías Gulf, Argentina. Parasites analyzed in the present study were morphologically similar to previous records in other marine fishes from Argentine Sea, however, they were comparatively more irregular in their dimensions with respect to previous records. Taking account information about seasonal presence, prevalence and mean intensity observed for C. australe in this study, it could be claimed that Patagonian seahorse plays an accidental role as paratenic host to this helminth. Potential paths of infection and dispersion of this parasite in the ecosystem of San Antonio Bay are discussed regarding the trophic relationships among crustaceans, fishes and marine mammals.

Morphological data for Acanthocephaloides propinquus (Arhythmacanthidae) from gobiid fishes from the northwestern Black Sea are presented. Individuals from the Black Sea differ from the descriptions based on Mediterranean specimens in having 4–5 proboscis hooks per row in the former and 5–6 in the latter. The size of the cuticular spines is rejected as a diagnostic character for A. propinquus because their length varies in a wide range (3.0–7.5 µm). The diagnostic characters for identifying A. propinquus include the presence of small culticular spines, the testes located in the central part of the body and an acanthor having a single hooklet lacking a root.

Examination of two grass snakes - Natrix natrix (L.) from the Kielce revealed one trematode (Diplodiscus subclavatus) and one acanthocephalan (Acanthocephalus ranae). These species were noted in grass snake in Poland for the first time.

The present paper demonstrates results of analysis of 247 alimentary tracts of sea trout smolts (Salmo trutta m. trutta) grown in the drainage area of the river Rega (Pomerania). Frequency of occurrence of acanthocephalans and cestodes in the alimentary tract was determined, as well as their impact on fish condition.

W badanym materiale liczącym 247 smoltów troci wędrownej kolcogłowy wystąpiły w 164, tasiemce w 12, a kolcogłowy i tasiemce w 14 przewodach pokarmowych. Z powyższego wynika, że na ogólną ilość zarażonych ryb kolcogłowy wystąpiły w 178, a tasiemce w 26 przewodach pokarmowych. Obecność kolcogłowów stwierdzono w piętnastu z występujących szesnastu jednocentyme- trowych klas długości smoltów w zakresie 11-26 cm (z wyjątkiem 25 cm klasy długości). Tasiemce natomiast wystąpiły w sześciu i to niższych klasach długości smoltów w zakresie 12-20 cm (z wyjątkiem klasy długości 13; 18 i 19 cm). Ekstensywność inwazji kolcogłowów wynosiła 72% przy średniej intensywności zarażenia populacji 6,4, a tasiemców odpowiednio 10,5% i 0,53. W składzie pasożytów jelitowych występował kolcogłów Metechinorhynchus truttae (Schrank, 1788) oraz tasiemiec Cyathocephalus truncatus (Pallas, 1781). Nie stwierdzono wpływu występowania kolcogłowów i tasiemców na spadek kondycji smoltów troci wędrownej z Regi.

In total, 2097 individuals of Trachelipus squamuliger and 20 individuals of Armadillidium vulgare from four habitats (three woodland sites and one pasture) in the region of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, were examined for the presence of cystacanths of Plagiorhynchus cylindraceus, a common acanthocephalan parasite of passerine birds. In T. squamuliger from woodland habitats, cystacanths were found with prevalence 4.0–9.3%, intensity 1–5 (mean 1.22–1.57) and mean abundance 0.057–0.113. No significant differences were observed between infections in males and females of T. squamuliger. None of the T. squamuliger individuals from the pasture examined was infected. Out of 48 infected females of T. squamuliger, only one had developed eggs (in agreement with previous studies revealing the negative effect of the cystacanths on the development of female gonads of woodlice). One individual of A. vulgare was infected with a single cystacanth. The occurrence of P. cylindraceus in T. squamuliger is a new host record.
