The lecture thematizes the authorial reception of Franz Kafka in world literature. The author concentrates on the question of 'influence' while noting a triviality of inter-textual filiations among many contemporary (esp. American) authors. The problem of authorial reception appears much more seriously in the context of active authorial reception among some Central European writers, who find it necessary to come to terms with Kafka as one of the most symptomatic phenomena of modern literature. Going beyond Kafka has thus become the program of I. Aichinger, as well as P. Handke or P. Roth, but it also forms the background of the confrontation with Kafka in E. Cantetti. Productive employment of motifs from Kafka's work as universal and global cultural topoi can be found in the Japanese writer H. Murakami, whose work Kafka on the shore has brought a new model of authorial relationship to Kafka's work, among others.

This paper examines the main changes which were brought about by the globalization of culture and the commercialization of the book market in Slovakia after the fall of state socialism in 1989. It also aims at demonstrating the place of American literature in literary translation in Slovakia in the wake of the Velvet Revolution. The research assesses several different trends within publishing by answering such questions as: What are the most translated genres/subgenres? What are the proportions between aesthetically demanding literature and commercial/popular fiction? Who are the most widely translated American writers? Who are the translators that translated their works?

The study surveys meta- and para-texts about American literature in the Mladá tvorba magazine. Drawing on the ontological (meta-texts, Popovič, 1974) and on the spatial classification of text-derivation genres (para-texts, Genette, 1997), the study combines historical criticism (Pym, 2010) and pragmatic analysis (Verschueren, 2013) to interpret three meta-text genres from the corpus. These include: meta-textual apologetics, based on discourse mimicry; para-textual camouflage, based on contextualization; synthetizing translation, based on imitational and selective text derivation and quasi-meta-text.
