This paper presents the quantitative results of a doctor research project based on an empirical study of 'SAPARD' applications submitted to the Lodz Regional Office of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernizing of Agriculture. The sample consisted of 34 applications of food processing enterprises that decided to take part in the programme during the first year of its implementation. The collected data were subject to statistical analysis. Meat processors predominated in the sample. The beneficiaries operated under the different organizational and legal settings. The average value of proposed investment amounted to 4 million zlotys, whereas the subsidy covered around 40% of their total costs. The number of employees in the enterprises under study was expected to grow from 160 to 169 due to SAPARD projects after completing the investment. The expected increase in labour productivity was even more impressive. It turned out that SAPARD had a positive impact on the backward contractual market channel integration in the agri-food sector and it contributed to the development of export orientation of firms under study. It was an important incentive for entrepreneurship in the rural areas.

Included in the Europe 2020 strategy and the document “Innovation Union” indications concerning the implementation of a comprehensive European innovation strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth determine the importance that the European Union assigns innovation. Agri-food sector in Poland belongs to the key in the social and economic impact. Its economic impact on the internal market and international it decide as one of the most important, and at the same time, requiring constant care and support. An important determinant for the development of innovation in this sector are factors both strengthen and weaken the process of innovation. They belong to the group of external factors and internal factors associated with the personality of decision-makers on issues of application of innovative solutions in practice. The purpose of this work is to bring readers the essence of innovation in the proposed to its application within the meaning of and according to the author the most important factors and conditions affecting the quality of innovation, including decisions and actions taken by the competent bodies of the European Union and the Member States in the field of Polish accelerated, sustainable development agro-food sector.

The agricultural reform in Hungary broke the previously vertically integrated agri-food system along various lines. The structures of agriculture, the food industry and food retailing have fundamentally changed, in ways that have also influenced the vertical governance structures in the sector. The aim of this paper is to investigate the choice of supply channels in the Hungarian fruit and vegetable sector available to farmers by employing the framework of transaction-cost economics. The authors' analysis is based on a survey of marketing-channel choices by fruit and vegetable producers in Csongrád County. A multinomial logit model is applied to reveal on the determinants influencing the choice among various supply channels. The results seem to contradict some of the basic propositions of transaction-cost economics.

The intensity of business mergers and acquisitions changes over time. Theoretically, com¬petitive firms constantly seek for ways to grow mainly due to expected economies of scale and scope. In the paper we discuss various aspects of business mergers and acquisitions in the context of market concentration. We also highlight the issue of symptoms and causes of fluc¬tuations in economic activity. Using data for the period of 2000-2012 we analyse the value of the overall business mergers and acquisitions in connection with the world economic growth and selected stock market indexes. Next, we focus on the world agro-food sector and test the hypothesis that the number and value of mergers and acquisitions in this sector were related to the business cycle fluctuations observed in the period of 2000-2010. Firstly, the results of our research show that both merger and acquisition transactions carried out in the agro-food sector had largely inter-branch or, at the most, inter-sectorial character. Secondly, a positive relationship between fluctuations in economic activity in the world agro-food sector and the intensity of mergers and acquisitions was found, especially regarding the value of those transactions, what means that economic recovery facilitates concentration processes. Thirdly, the observed connection between the directions of changes in the merger and acquisition activities and the changes in stock market indexes seems to be determined by the situation on the capital markets.

The aim of the article is to provide the conditions and opportunities for the development of the agro-food sector and rural areas in Poland, resulting from the possible implementation of projects within the framework of the BIOSTRATEG. Are the key determinants of innovative projects within the framework of the BIOSTRATEG. On the basis of the analysis of BIOSTRATEG, both national and EU documents and organizational status and rules for research funding applications have been formulated conclusion, which should affect the effective implementation of the projects of BIOSTRASTEG, and thus to improve the competitiveness of the domestic agri-food sector and rural operating conditions through the implementation of innovative solutions.
