Collecting art and supporting book culture was a phenomenon widely occurring among the Czech major figures acting in the economic and political life in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1939. One of them, General Director of the Živnostenská banka, JUDr. Jaroslav Preiss, collected art and books as well, but his relationship to his collections, mainly to his library, was a special one, as have already discovered his contemporaries. He collected books with deep knowledge and mastery. His library provided a unique, large and precious collection of the literature and history of the Czech lands reaching from the 16th to the 19th century. This study aims to present Preiss’s activities concerning writing and editing own books, supporting Czech book culture, purchasing books and expanding his collection. Attention is also paid to his friendship and acquaintance with some of the main representants of the Czechoslovak book culture.
