Veniamin Korsak is a writer who represents the Russian literature of the first wave of emigration and is known primarily through a series of five autobiographical no- vels presenting the story of a simple man who went into German captivity during World War I and then returned to Russia, which was overwhelmed by civil war. Korsak’s works are a testimony of a “little man”, looking at reality through the prism of ordinary everyday affairs, instinctively trying to survive in the historical turmoil. This article is an attempt to show the specificity of this perspective on the basis of his novels.

The author presents the results of historical literary research on Marian Czuchnowski. Analysis of interviews and conversations with Czuchnowski show him to be a rebel and revolutionary poet. The author describes his turbulent life prior to 1939. During this time his concern for the people prompted him to call for mass gatherings in the countryside, for which he was frequently arrested. The author traces the development of his literary talent, starting with the rebellious poetry of his youth, and tracks his career through the 1930s. She discusses his cooperation with pre-World War Two publications and literary groups. She presents the wartime experiences of Czuchnowski, who left literary traces of his journey through Russian forced labour camps, Iran, Palestine and Egypt, to London. The author also examines the poet’s works to analyse his London period – initially filled with success, but becoming harder with time. The writer’s bibliography constitutes a valuable addition to the text.

This article argues for the need of preparing a new, complete edition of Jan Lechoń’s (1899–1956) journal. The author describes the importance that keeping a diary had for the poet, and traces Lechoń’s own efforts to get this work published. Moreover, previous editions of the work – the exile version from 1967–1973 (ed. Mieczysław Grydzewski and Juliusz Sakowski) and the domestic one from 1992–1993 (ed. Roman Loth) – are reconsidered here, revealing the necessity of preparing a new edition. The final part of the article contains some practical solutions which might be taken into account while preparing a new edition of the journal (base text, critical apparatus, digital version).

Artykuł traktuje o potrzebie przygotowania nowego, pełnego wydania dziennika Jana Lechonia (1899–1956). Autor opisuje w nim znaczenie, jakie miało dla poety prowadzenie diariusza, oraz odtwarza zabiegi Lechonia o jego publikację. Omawia ponadto dotychczasowe edycje dzieła: emigracyjną z lat 1967–1973 (Mieczysław Grydzewski, Juliusz Sakowski) oraz krajową z lat 1992–1993 (Roman Loth), uzasadniając tym samym konieczność przygotowania nowego jego wydania. W ostatniej części zaproponowano rozwiązania, które można zastosować w nowej edycji diariusza (podstawa tekstowa, aparat krytyczny, wersja cyfrowa).

This article presents the hitherto unknown letters the Czech writer Egon Hostovský (1908–1973) wrote to the Norwegian writer, critic, essayist, editor and translator Sigurd Hoel (1890–1960). These letters date from 1949–1956 and are preserved in the National Library of Norway in Oslo. Not only do they provide interesting information about Hostovský’s efforts to publish his works in Scandinavia, but they also testify to a close friendship between the two writers. The article also presents two letters by Graham Greene (1904–1991) which are also preserved in the file containing Hostovský’s letters in the Norwegian National Library.
