The paper presents a qualitative analysis of the image of Arabs and Islam in Polish history, geography and knowledge about society (WOS) textbooks for gymnasium and lyceum students. There are two predominant patterns: if dry fact are described (climate, cultivation, natural resources - for geography; course of wars, colonialism or battles - for history) they are presented rather objective and hardly any stereotypes occur; as soon as cultural and religious matters are introduced or involved - the narration often becomes subjective or even misguided. That is why the analysis focuses on the latter approach - presenting narrations related to: Muhammad and his revelation, duties of Muslims and the notion of 'jihad', status of women, the Sunni-Shia division, and so called 'Arabisation' of Islam. Even though attention is paid especially to stereotypes and misconceptions, few examples of good practice are presented as well.
