Abstract Friedrich Ludwig Jahn’s monuments in Silesia Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778–1852) was a German gymnastics educator commonly known as Turnvater Jahn. In the 19th and 20th centuries there were erected over 300 monuments in honour of him, mostly in Germany, Austria and what was later Czechoslovakia. They usually looked the same: a stone with a commemorative plaque showing Jahn’s bust. The article describes the monuments to Jahn in Silesia. The sources of information about them were mainly old newspapers. In Silesia at least 15 monuments were erected: in Biała (Zülz), Bolesławiec (Bunzlau), Bolków (Bolkenhain), Chojnów (Haynau), Gliwice (Gleiwitz), Jawor (Jauer), Kamienna Góra (Landeshut), Kłodzko (Glatz), Nowa Sól (Neusalz), Prusice (Prausnitz), Strzelin (Strehlen), Syców (Groß Wartenberg), Środa Śląska (Neumarkt), Trzebnica (Trebnitz), Złotoryja (Goldberg). Nearly all of them date back to prior to World War I. Only one was built after this conflict. Most of the monuments were situated in Lower Silesia. Only two were erected in Upper Silesia. The article discusses the secessions in the Mountaineering Society of Kłodzko (Glatzer Gebirgsverein, GGV). The first to split off was the Słupiec division in 1894. After merely two years they returned to the ranks of GGV. In 1909 the Bardo division gained autonomy, thus forming the Society for Bardo and surrounding area (Ortsverein für Wartha und Umgegend). In 1933 it briefly re-joined the ranks of GGV. In 1923 the Mountaineering Society of Złoty Stok (Reichensteiner Gebirgsverein) was formed, it joined with the Silesian-Sudetes Mountaineering Society (Schlesischer Sudetengebirgsverein) after ten years. The article concerns organisational issues as well as the achievements of organisations from Słupiec, Bardo and Złoty Stok.

Adipose tissue is at a point of high interest in medical research, not only as an energy depot, but also because it secretes nearly more than 600 cytokines. These are termed‚ adipokines’. Human adipokines are involved in numerous metabolic processes, including the regulation of appetite, energy expenditure, insulin sensitivity, inflammation and cardiovascular activity. Thus, these could be clinically important as a markers of adipose tissue function and increased metabolic risk. The search for novel adipokines linking obesity to related co-morbidities has become a major topic in obesity research. In such work, there is an increasing need to define their function, their molecular targets and their potential clinical relevance as biomarkers or in the treatment of obesity and other metabolic diseases. Omentin (34 kDa) is a recently identified fat deposition-specific adipokine with multiple interactions. Concentrations of omentin have been shown to be decreased in patients with obesity and impaired glucose regulation, in patients afflicted with diabetes type 1 and 2, and in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. These are all diseases commonly associated with insulin resistance and obesity. The aim of this study was to show and compare the latest information about omentin and its relationships with obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM), metabolic syndrome (MetS), inflammation, cardiac problems, sex hormone imbalances and cancer. The association of omentin with particular metabolic indexes may suggest that an elevation in omentin level may be seen as being a marker for leanness, while a decreased level will underline possible situations of overweight and obesity along with their comorbidities (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, inflammation and even cancer). However, a challenge for the future is to fully understand the multiple role played by omentin. Thus, more studies in these matter are required.

In “Prawo w Działaniu” (“Law in Action”), issue 49/2022, Łukasz Pohl made a proposal to amend Article 11 of the Polish Criminal Code with a view to replacing the singular construct of the same offence, as adopted in the currently applicable Polish Criminal Code, with a multiplicitous construct of one and the same behaviour. This article analyses said proposal in terms of its operability in the legal system. It lists several negative consequences and inconsistencies concerning the multiplicitous construct of offences, and claims this proposal must be rejected.

W tomie 49/2022 „Prawa w Działaniu” Łukasz Pohl wystąpił z propozycją nowelizacji art. 11 Kodeksu karnego w kierunku zmiany konstrukcji jedności przestępstwa na gruncie tego samego czynu, przyjmowanej przez obowiązujący Kodeks karny, na konstrukcję wielości przestępstw na gruncie jednego i tego samego zachowania. W artykule propozycja ta została przeanalizowana pod kątem jej operatywności w systemie prawnym. Wskazano szereg negatywnych konsekwencji i niespójności dotyczących konstrukcji wielości przestępstw, postulując konieczność odrzucenia przedstawionej propozycji.

The aim of the study was to assess plasma concentration of catecholamines and asymmetric dimethyl arginine levels and a possible relationship to predict the mortality rates among hemodialysis patients. The study population comprised 27 subjects, aged 65-70 years. Each patient underwent dialysis thrice a week. Furthermore, the median duration of hemodialysis was 3.5 years. Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that the concentrations of adrenaline and the level of asymmetric dimethylarginine have predictive value of mortality among hemodialysis patients. Of note, lowering plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine concentration may represent therapeutic target for prevention of progressive renal damage.
