On the occasion of the 20 years’ anniversary of the academic journal Sprawy Narodowościowe (Nationalities Affairs) its origin and current situation have been presented in some detail. This bi-annual international and multidisciplinary journal was established in 1992 as a continuation of traditions of the prewar bi-monthly of the same title, which originally appeared in Warsaw in 1927-1939. It focuses on the study of nation, nationalisms and ethnicity, and is published under the auspices of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with the Institute for the Slavic Studies in Warsaw and Poznan as its editor. In the years between 1992 to 2012 a total number of ca. 550 articles, including 60 in English, as well as 170 book reviews was published, while the total number of printed pages reached 10,000. The contributors, in the number of 350, come mainly from Poland but also from abroad. Abstracts and pdf versions are available in the Internet. The text comprises a separate part including a full list of all the issues published over the 20 years’ period, as well as a full bibliography of all the contributions. Each entry contains a name of the author/co-author, title of the article, issue number and year of publication (a name of translator, if there is one).

The paper discusses some of the main factors that are most probable to determine ways of development of the Polish ethnic schooling abroad in the future. The analysis is based on the system of the so-called Saturday schools of Polish in the Chicago area. Although an extensive research concerning the present state and the history of these schools has been done recently, still much relevant data pertaining to their needs remain unknown. The paper makes an attempt to justify the growing significance of three factors on which a lot of effort to avoid the Polish language loss among Polish-Americans seems to depend. These factors are as follows: 1. development of theory and methods of teaching Polish as a foreign language (TPFL); 2. educating of competent Polish teachers; 3. use of programs within the public education sphere. The basic change that the Saturday schools are undergoing now is connected with the increasing number of English-speaking children born in the U.S.A. of Polish background who, however, do not speak Polish at all. They must study it almost as any foreign language, in a manner similar to the way foreigners learn Polish. The author postulates that joint efforts on the part of applied linguists from Poland and from among Polish Americans be taken in order to introduce modern methods and materials for TPFL, to include it in the language policy and bilingual education programs in the U.S.A., to educate Polish teachers, etc. Provided these measures be taken, the Polish ethnic schools will not disappear.

Ludwik Gocel (1889-1966) was an expert on the November Uprising and the creator of a large historical collection documenting this national liberation uprising. He was also interested in the biography of Cyprian Norwid and the reception of the poet’s work, some of which were part of his collection. Based, inter alia, on the materials from Gocel’s archive and his legacy, and the content of his letter of December 1957, this sketch discusses a fragment of the history of Norwid’s autograph of the poem Italiam!Italiam! The sketch outlines the circumstances in which Gocel obtained the poem for his collection in 1949, which after a few years, in 1957, he handed over to Fawley Court in England, where it supplemented the collection of Father Józef Jarzębowski, a Marian, expert on Norwid and collector of national memorabilia. The text also takes into account an important aspect of the cooperation between the two bibliophiles Gocel and Jarzębowski, owing to which Norwid’s manuscript has been preserved and today it is exhibited in the Museum in Licheń Stary. In addition, the article presents several other manifestations of Gocel’s interest in Norwid.
