A new theory of the instrumental is submitted. It is claimed that the meaning of the instrumental is construed pragmatically on the basis of the semantics of the relevant noun and that of the context, that the instrumental denotes something principally relevant for the given situation to be thought of, and that the instrumental involves the notion of causative relations, which in many contexts remains hidden, becoming clearly visible only in the case of the instrumental of instrument.
