The resistance determinants were transferred from clinical strains of enterococci to Staphylococcus aureus strains. As recipients methicillin - resistant and methicillin- susceptible strains were used and the filter - mating procedure was performed. The transconjugants resistant to erythromycin were obtained in the case of all recipients. in one case the vanA determinant conferring the resistance to vancomycin was transferred together with erythromycin resistance. However the resistance was very unstable and the level was not as high as in the case of Enterococcus faecalis donor strain. The vanA determinant was easily transferred between enterococcal strains by the conjugation and a transfer occurred of vanA alone or together with erythromycin resistance.

Określano wrażliwość Staphylococcus intermedius oraz 14 różnych gatunków gronkowców koagulazo-ujemnych na bakteriofagi Staphylococcus aureus konwertujące pozytywnie enterotoksynę A (SEA). Badano także możliwość międzygatunkowego przeniesienia bakteriofagów S. aureus niosących gen enterotoksyny A (sea) do genomu innych gatunków gronkowców.

The ability of lysogenization was examined of 50 S. intermedius strains and of 77 strains belonging to 14 different species of coagulase-negative staphylococci using 8 enterotoxin A converting bacteriophages isolated from S. aureus. All the examined bacteriophages showed lytic activity against at least 1 of 11 susceptible strains of S. intermedius to them. Lytic activity towards coagulase-negative staphylococci was observed for 6 of 8 examined bacteriophages. Two bacteriophages were active against 1 of 9 examined S. capitis strains, one against 1 of 11 examined S. haemolyticus strains, four against 1 of 6 examined S. lugdunensis strains, three against 1 of 6 examined S. warneri strains and one against 1 of 5 examined S. xylosus strains. Lysogenization with bacteriophage f421-1 able to convert positively enterotoxin A and staphylokinase and negatively beta-haemolysin of oneS. Intermedius strain was successful. S. intermedius lysogenized with §421-1 was able to produce both enterotoxin A and staphylokinase and lost ability to produce beta-haemolysin. Our results showed a broad lytic spectrum and interspecies host range of some S. aureus bacteriophages and the ability of interspecies transfer of bacteriophages between S. aureus and S. intermedius.

Badano poziom wrażliwości na wankomycynę szczepów Staphylococcus aureus. Wykazano, że szczepy o podwyższonym MIC występowały wyłącznie w grupie gronkowców opornych na metycylinę oraz charakteryzujących się opornością na wiele innych antybiotyków. W celu oceny czy wszystkie te szczepy stanowiły jeden klon rozprzestrzeniony na kilku oddziałach szpitalnych przeprowadzono analizę epidemiologiczną.

The MIC of vancomycin was determined for all S. aureus strains isolated during 1997 in one hospital. MIC values for most isolates were in the range of 0,5 — 2 mg/l. In 18 strains, MIC was = 6mg/L. All these strains were MRSA. Recently described VISA strains possessed MIC values for vancomycin equal or higher than 8 mg/l and such strains were not detected in the investigated group. Although strains with MIC = 6 mg/l are not VISA, but they are candidate for reduced vancomycin susceptibility, e.g. during therapy in compromised patients. Analysis of DNA of these strains by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) revealed that 15 of them shared a significant similarity, allowing to place them in the same group. The comparison data of phage patterns as well as antibiotic resistance patterns strongly suggest that all these strains were derivatives of a single clone.

The standard, non lysogenic, bacteriophage free S. aureus NTCC 8325-4 strain was lysogenized willi 15 different, obtained in our laboratory staphylokinase-converting bacteriophage belonging to serological groups A, B and F. MIC and MBC of vancomycin as well as the ratio of MBC to MIC were evaluated for all 15 lysogenic derivatives. The obtained results were compared with those for maternal strain. In the case of eight strains the ratio MBC/MIC showed the presence of tolerance to vankomycin (MBC/MIC ≥ 32). Four of the vancomycin-tolerant derivatives were lysogenized with bacteriophages belonging to the serological group A, two wen members of group B and two belonged to group F.
