A checklist of literature records of the digenean parasites of macrourids from the world’s oceans is given. Where necessary annotations discussing the validity of the records are included. In addition, the records are listed under host. Tables summarising (I) the occurrence of parasites families, and (II) the geographical distribution of parasite species, are included. A figure illustrating the bathymetry of the parasite species is given. Information from 84 papers is summarised, in cluding records from 49 host-species and 13 genera. 68 identified species of adult worm, from 29 genera and 12 families and are reported. The most frequently reported families are the Lepocreadiidae, Derogenidae and Hemiuridae. The most frequently reported genus is Lepidapedon. Worms are reported from macrourids a depths between 150 and 7,000 m, with five identified species reported from the north-eastern Atlantic abyssal plain at a depth of about 4,850 m.

The lepocreadiid fauna of New Caledonia is reported and discussed and a new species and several new host and locality records presented. Hypoporus plataxi sp. nov. from Platax teira is described and distinguished from its only congener by its terminal genitalia, the structure of the anterior part of the alimentary system and other morphological features. New host and locality records and a description are given of Lepotrema cf. clavatum Ozaki, 1932 in Sufflamen fraenatum. New host and locality records are given of Lobatocreadium exiguum (Manter, 1963) in Pseudobalistes fuscus, which is also reported in the known hosts Abalistes filamentosus and Sufflamen fraenatum. New host and locality records are given of Opisthogonoporus amadai Yamaguti, 1937 in Branchiostegus wardi. A new host record is made for Holorchis plectorhynchi Durio et Manter, 1968 in Diagramma pictum. Pseudopycnadena tendu sp. nov. is described from the balistid Pseudobalistes fuscus from the waters off New Caledonia. It differs from the only other member of the genus P. fischthali Saad-Fares et Maillard, 1986, in its broad cirrus-sac, with the wide field of large gland-cells, its less nearly circular body shape, its dorsal excretory pore, its shorter post-testicular region, its relatively larger ventral sucker and its smaller eggs. The genus is re-defined to take these distinctions into account. Other opecoelid species reported from New Caledonia are Allopodocotyle epinepheli (Yamaguti, 1942) from Epinephelus cyanopodus, E. fasciatus and E. merra, Cainocreadium epinepheli (Yamaguti, 1934) from E. coeruleopunctatus, E. fasciatus and Variola louti, Hamacreadium mutabile (Linton, 1910) from Lutjanus fulviflamma and L. kasmira, Helicometra epinepheli Yamaguti, 1934 from E. fasciatus and E. merra, Orthodena tropica Durio et Manter, 1968 from Lethrinus lentjan, Pacificreadium serrani (Nagaty et Abdel-Aal, 1962) from Plectropomus leopardus and Pseudoplagioporus interruptus Durio et Manter, 1968 from Lethrinus rubrioperculatus.

Diploproctodaeum monstrosum sp. nov. is described from Arothron stellatus and A. mappa from off Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef. It differs from its congeners in having a body-length ventral scoop. Diploproctodaeum triodoni sp. nov. is described from Triodon macropterus off New Caledonia. It is distinguished by the extensive vitelline fields usually reaching to the ventral sucker and the folded scoop margins. Other related species are reported from new hosts or localities and dimensions are supplied for: Diploproctodaeum haustrum from Aluterus monoceros off New Caledonia; Diploproctodaeum arothroni from Arothron hispidus off Lizard Island and Ningaloo Reef, northern Western Australia, A. nigropunctatus off Lizard Island and Arothron manilensis off New Caledonia; Diploproctodaeum macracetabulum from Abalistes stellatus on the Swain Reefs, southern Great Barrier Reef and off New Caledonia; Diploproctodaeum momoaafata from Ostracion cubicus off Lizard Island; Diploproctodaeum rutellum from Platax teira off Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef; Diploproctodaeoides longipygum from Abalistes stellatus on the Swain Reefs and off New Caledonia; Diplocreadium tsontso from Balistoides conspicillum off Heron Island; Bianium arabicum from Lagocephalus sceleratus off New Caledonia. Attention is drawn to apparent convergent evolution in the body form of several families of trematodes infecting tetraodontids and especially species of Arothron.

The phylogeny of the Acanthocolpidae, a family of marinejlsh parasites, was assessed using SSU and LSU rDNA and combined sequences of thirteen putative species. Cableia púdica is found to be a basal monorchiid, not an acanthocolpid. The remaining species form a monophylum only if the marine mammal parasite, the brachycladiid Zalophotrema hepaticum is included. The Acanthocolpidae comprises two clades (Zalophotrema (Pleorchis, Tormopsolus)) and (Stephanostomum). Some morphological similarities were detected between Zalophotrema and Pleorchis, but Tormopsolus is morphologically more similar to Stephanostomum. Nine species of the large genus Stephanostomum were studied, including two species from two host species each, and the relationships inferred from the analysis of sequences were poorly reflected in morphological or biological characteristics. Evidence from sister taxa indicates that the parasites of piscivorous marine mammals, the Brachycladiidae, are derived from piscivorous marine fish parasites.
