Jerzy (Georg) Samuel Bandtkie (1768-1835), a versatile researcher, historian, expert on Slavonic languages, lexicographer and publisher, has his permanent place in the history of Polish science and culture. He is particularly esteemed as one of the pioneers of studies of the history of the book and libraries in Poland. His notable merits in the field of numismatics are not to be underestimated, albeit they have hitherto been hardly noticed. He dealt with numismatics while working in Wroclaw (Breslau) (1798--1811), and in Cracow in particular (1811-1835), where he was the librarian (actually the head) of the Library of the Jagiellonian University. Bandtkie's first numismatic article (in German) touched upon the oldest Polish and Silesian coins. His textbook on the history of Poland includes large sections on the history of coins in Poland, from the Middle Ages up to the 18th century. Particularly worth mentioning is his article in Latin (erroneously attributed to somebody else) on Roman coins found in Poland. The explanatory model of the inflow of Roman coins into the area of Poland it includes is extremely interesting and fundamentally compliant with current approach to the issue. The work also contains information on 20 coin finds from the area in question. Bandtkie's enormous achievement was to considerably enlarge and catalogue the numismatic collection of the Jagiellonian Library ofwhich he was in charge. The catalogue he created included 6 volumes (only 5 have been preserved). It is not merely a valuable source for the reconstruction of the numismatic collection of the Jagiellonian University, but a source of information on coin collectors as well and also in many cases on coin finds from Poland. Bandtkie's manuscripts kept in the Jagiellonian Library are of a similar value.

The article discusses the four editions of Pomponius Laetus' work 'De Romanorum magistratibus, sacerdotiis, iurisperitis et legibus', printed in Cracow in the early 16th century. The edition of 1543 contained commentary by the lawyer Stanislław Aichler (Glandinus) of Cracow.
