The main attempt of this study is to overview and to discuss occupational safety and environmental conciseness for the transportation of LNG with gas carriers. LNG is transported by a fleet of 157 LNG tankers of varying sizes from 18,500 m3 to 140,000 m3. This study investigates the technological development and innovation in LNG transportation while considering safety and environmental standards and regulations for LNG shipping. It is also originally contributing the process safety for decision making process for the MET institutions while planning the further needs of LNG industry during the planning of their related curricula. The further research activities could also be concentrated on quantitative risk evaluations of LNG equipment, based on risk maintenance and reliability concepts.

ECDIS as a real-time navigation system integrating variety of charts and navigation-related information that replaces the usage of paper chart. Nowadays, ECDIS usage is getting more recognized as being used for both navigation and collision avoidance tasks. In this consideration, Turkish ship management companies are at the right cornerstone to take a decision for the substitution of paper chart with ECDIS. Cost factor has a significant role during the selection process and it needs to be optimized with cost-benefit ratios of each alternative. This study originally tends to describe decision making process with alternative solutions that could be applied to ship’s bridge operations. By utilizing multi-criteria decision making model, it is aimed to facilitate the selection of two alternatives with “Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)”. Consequently quantifying the influence of related factors to the selection of two alternatives for Turkish management companies, a hierarchical analysis framework is developed and applied by AHP method.

Despite the various developments in maritime society, human errors have been continued to be one of the primarily causes of marine accidents. The outcomes of detailed investigations on the root causes of human errors can provide valuable support on execution process of required precautions on board merchant ships. This paper examines the potential role of the design-based failures in shipboard systems on human errors during operational process. After completing the statistical research on maritime accidents, the paper concentrates on the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) and the model is supported with the illustrative cases related to the influences of design-based failures on human errors. Consequently, this study originally proposes integrated unit into the HFACS systematic to manage to identify design-based human errors in maritime casualties. The model is eagerly expected to provide additional contributions on identifying the influences of poor design and constructional failures on human errors.

The quality improvement of the Turkish Maritime Education and Training (MET) system is a relevant political and scientific issue which strongly impacts the competitiveness of the shipping sector in Turkiye. However, MET is quite an expensive Education and Training (ET) system since it requires high investments and incurs high running costs. The existing situation enforces the training system to be able to execute under the desired level of sector expectations in terms of graduates quantity. This study mainly focuses on the investigation of the economic needs of MET facilities. And some of the relevant recommenda-tions are drawn up to improve the efficiency of current MET system. In this respect, the proposed items basically refer to the need of concentrating and integrating resources in order to exploit some degree of economies and pursuing quality in MET.

Thus, the importance of turnover from the point of view of managers’ is that a high rate of turnover not only necessitates a costly personnel replacement, recruitment, selection and training of new personnel but also disrupts normal operations resulting in a loss of productivity and safety. Besides a loss of critical personnel who is carrying out core activities, like master, chief engineer or chief officer that can not be compensated easily with an other competent alternative, it could definitely result in a loss of production and loss of a skilled worker who is competent and reliable with safety precautions and company politics which means loss of thousands of dollars in maritime transportation. This study concentrates on making an investigation on “intention to quit” and its antecedents. Consequently the effects of turnover on both organizational and safety aspects and their countermeasures are discussed in advanced.

Maritime industry is still a human-centered industry in spite of latest technologies which has developed for reducing marine accidents. Human based errors cause marine accidents more than equipment based problems. These accidents cause catastrophic consequences about human life and marine environment. Fatigue of navigation officers plays effective role on these human-based errors and marine accidents. Fatigue can be defined as temporary loss of strength and energy resulting from hard physical or mental work. There are several factors that effect navigation officer’s fatigue. Fatigue is associated with poor quality sleep, negative environmental factors, high job demands and high stress. In this study, relationship between fatigue of navigation officers and marine accidents examined; Factors which are affecting fatigue of navigation officers determined with SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis method. SWOT analysis is an established method for assisting the formulation of strategy. With this analysis, efforts were made to explore the ways and means of converting the possible threats into opportunities and changing the weaknesses into strengths. Consequently strategic action plans were developed for minimizing fatigue related human errors on-board.
