Bacterial infections are a serious problem for commercial farms of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) in Poland. Given the absence of efficient vaccines, it is crucial to search for new agents enhancing the non-specific immune response of the fish. In the present study, immunomodulating effects of lipopolysaccharide extracted from the virulent (LPS-P) and non-virulent (LPS-NP) strains of Aeromonas hydrophila were studied. For that purpose, different concentrations of LPS-P and LPS-NP (25, 50, and 75 µg/100 g body weight) were administered to test animals through intraperitoneal injection. The non-specific immune response of the fish were studied at days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 60 after vaccination. Immunostimulated fish showed an increase in total leukocyte count, in the population of monocytes and neutrophils, and in immature cell count in the whole blood. Phagocytic activity and the production of reactive oxygen species were also elevated after vaccination. Moreover, vaccinated fish showed a significant increase in serum lysozyme. The results of the present study show that LPS-NP has a greater immunostimulatory effect than LPS-P at doses of 50 and 75 µg/100 g body weight. In addition, 7 days after vaccination with LPS-NP (50 µg/100 g body weight), fish were challenged with the virulent strain of A. hydrophila. The relative percentage of survival in groups 1 and 2 was 58.82% and 76. 47%, respectively, which indicates that the administration of LPS-NP makes C. carpio more resistant to infection by A. hydrophila

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Ichtio Hexan (a complex blend of Allium sativum extract, Chelidonium majus extract, Origanum vulgare extract, carvacrol and cinnamic aldehyde) for the control of spironucleosis (hexamitosis) in rainbow trout fingerlings. For this purpose, three groups of rainbow trout naturally infected with S. salmonis were fed diets containing either no Ichtio Hexan or supplemented with Ichtio Hexan at a rate of 0.1 ml/kg bw (group 1) or 1 ml/kg bw (group 2) for 38 days. During this period mortalities were recorded and the dead fish were examined to confirm the isolations of S. salmonis. At the end of the experiment the fish were sacrificed, individually weighed and measured, their livers removed and weighed. In order to determine the prevalence and intensity of infection the intestinal contents were examined. The results of the present study showed that Ichtio Hexan in an amount of 0.1 ml/kg bw considerably reduced mortality caused by S. salmonis in rainbow trout fingerlings. The number of S. salmonis trophozoites in the digestive tract after administration of Ichtio Hexan at this dose for 38 days was significantly reduced and limited only to the posterior part of the intestine. On the other hand, in the 1 ml/kg bw fed group none of the fish were infected and the gain in the body weight was significantly increased; however, the mortality rate was similar to the control group. The experimental groups did not differ significantly from each other with regards to the condition factor and hepatosomatic index. Considering the above findings, Ichtio Hexan at a dose of 0.1 ml/kg bw can be successfully used in rainbow trout farms to reduce the mortality rate in S. salmonis infected fish.

The effect of dietary Echinacea purpurea (EP) on the response of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to a Flavobacterium columnare vaccine was investigated. Two hundred D. rerio with an average weight of 290 ± 40 g were selected and fed different levels of E. purpurea (5 g kg⁻¹ diet - group 1, 10 g kg⁻¹ diet - group 2, 20 g kg⁻¹ diet - group 3, 30 g kg⁻¹ diet - group 4, and 0 g kg⁻¹ diet - group 5). Experimental feeding was begun 3 weeks prior to bath immunization and continued until the end of the experiment. Twenty-eight days after immunization the fish were challenged by bath immersion with F. columnare at a concentration of 1x106 CFU/ml. The relative percent survival of the experimental groups (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) was 5.0, 6.0, 30.0, 36.0 and 5.0, respectively. In conclusion, diet supplementation with E. purpurea may effectively enhance the response of zebrafish to a F. columnare vaccine.

Extremely high pace of development force engineers to handle complicated and unusual problems. Commonly accepted design methodologies very often must undergo severe changes and improvements exceeding widely accepted standards to deliver the reliable results. The authors of this work handle complex problem of explosive loading also known as high velocity impulse loading which occurs during an impact. The class of such problems very often refers to the unusual impulse which, in particular, can be subjected to the masonry structures. These commonly used long structures can be characterized as composite material composed of two distinct sections: bricks and mortar. Moreover, the passive safety system is adopted to increase the threshold of the masonry. Additionally, the steel wired mesh and aramid fabrics are used to retrofit the brick wall.
