The paper presents basic information on Structural Health Monitoring systems with focus on their aims and functions. Two types of SHM systems are proposed: systems dedicated for object safety and systems for object maintenance. The paper presents examples of completed SHM systems of both types. Conclusions point out lack of rules and regulations which are necessary to reduce number of design mistakes of SHM systems of new objects currently constructed in Poland.
