The article deals with collections and collecting as a literary theme. Research on this issue should be undertaken by literary scholars, as collectionssupport the features of literary characters and give protagonists their identity. The work analysed from this angle is Money by Andrzej Strug from 1914. It interprets and describes three different collections and three different collectors: the eccentric Lyttons and their museum of stones, Lucy Slazenger’s precious jewellery collection and the art collection of Osias Murway, an enthusiast of antiquities.

The article is a continuation of the analysis of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s novel The Provinces started in the previous issue of “Annales”. It is complemented with physiognomical portraits of the supporting characters, which have been characterized by a narrator with equal care as the main characters. In the text interpreted further are: eyes expression, the sense of touch and physiological reactions of the body (blush, sudden paleness), which are more specific clarifications of human nature.

Artykuł jest kontynuacją rozpoczętej w poprzednim numerze „Annales” analizy powieści Elizy Orzeszkowej Na prowincji. Jej uzupełnieniem są portrety fizjonomiczne postaci drugoplanowych, które przez narratora zostały scharakteryzowane z równą starannością, co bohaterowie pierwszoplanowi. W tekście interpretowane są ponadto: ekspresja spojrzenia, zmysł dotyku oraz fizjologiczne reakcje ciała (rumieniec, nagła bladość), które służą dookreśleniu natury ludzkiej.

The article concerns the physiognomic portrayal in Eliza Orzeszkowa’s novel In the Provinces (Na prowincji). The writer used Johann Caspar Lavater’s treaty as well as his views on beauty and ugliness. Lavater’s theory was an example of the relation between soul and body; man became beautiful thanks to a particular type of professed morality. Orzeszkowa’s literary heroes always possessed more or less extensive physiognomic portraits, which explained their character. The observation of the “outer man” allowed the author to guess from bodily signs (head shape, mouth line, eye size, forehead, wrinkles, etc.) the “inner man”, his nature, character, strengths and  weaknesses. The first part of the novel In the Provinces (Na prowincji) analyzed in a physiognomic manner shows the writer’s sensitivity for true and false beauty and the Greek kalos kagathos.

Artykuł dotyczy portretowania fizjonomicznego w powieści Elizy Orzeszkowej Na prowincji. Pisarka korzystała z traktatu Johanna Caspara Lavatera, a także z jego poglądów na kategorie piękna i brzydoty. Lavaterowska teoria była przykładem związku duszy i ciała; człowiek stawał się piękny dzięki określonemu rodzajowi wyznawanej moralności. Bohaterowie Orzeszkowej zawsze posiadali mniej lub bardziej rozbudowane portrety fizjonomiczne, które tłumaczyły ich charakter. Obserwacja człowieka zewnętrznego pozwalała autorce na odgadnięcie z oznak cielesnych (kształtu głowy, linii ust, wielkości oka, wyglądu czoła, zmarszczek etc.) człowieka wewnętrznego, jego natury, charakteru, wad i zalet. Pierwsza część analizowanej pod kątem fizjonomicznym powieści Na prowincji pokazuje wrażliwość artystyczną pisarki na kategorie piękna prawdziwego i fałszywego, na greckie kalos kagathos.

This article is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the sense of touch in the early novel The Virtuous by Eliza Orzeszkowa. Touch is used in emotional or intentional tones, and in its character is the force of interaction: positive or negative. In the novel The Virtuous, touch in a physiognomical context was particularly important, which added diagnostic information about the nature of the literary hero. Due to the satirical content of the work, there was definitely more badness in tangibility that distinguished the small-town elite. Among the many categories of touch are “touch for show”, hidden touch, honourable touch, metaphorically-meta-physical touch, and empathic touch.
