Overpressure has been frequentlyencountered in sedimentary environments. Study characteristics of overpressure and prediction of overpressure by seismic data are important in the enhancement of petroleum exploration and production, especially for safe and economic drilling in overpressure areas. In this paper, the author presents some characteristics of overpressure in sedimentary basins, influence of overpressure on petroleum system, and the prediction of overpressure from seismic data by using stacking velocities, pre-stack migration velocities as well as other types of velocity. The results of overpressure study for South Conson basin (Vietnam), such as characteristics, causes and distribution of overpressure, ability of overpressure prediction before drilling etc have been presented. Based on the outcomes of this study, the author proposed some follow-up directions to investigate the relationship between overpressure generating process and several aspects of petroleum behaviour.
