The article aims to demonstrate that genocidal violence is largely a consequence of executing basic functions of the nation state and results from the same mechanisms that are used for everyday reproduction of imagined communities such as nations. This is based on the findings of comparative genocide characterized in detail elsewhere. The first part of the article discusses these features of the nation state, which are crucial in the process of mobilizing the collective violence. Among them of key importance are: establishing of borders, their symbolization and defense; territoriality; reproduction of nations as imagined communities; waging wars and preparing for them; social engineering concerning classification of people and identity politics; ideological discourses. In the second part, the author analyzes the situation of nation states in late modernity. He points out, among others, the development of “post-military communities”, renaissance of mercenaries; neocolonial conflicts; “war on terror” and the ideas of global popular culture. The author argues that despite the rapidly changing international situation, nation states have not lost their genocidal potency, and under certain conditions genocide can take place.

The article discusses representations of artificial intelligence (AI) in popular culture, mainly in the movies. The author focuses on AI turning against a man, seeking his extermination or enslavement. The paper investigates cinematic concepts of the birth of AI in the context of technological singularity. In these works which present maturing of AI we may observe that often its motives and aims which we assess as sinister are, in fact, the reaction to human actions. Emotional nature of AI and its irritating interactions with less intelligent and reasonable people has been revealed. The author discusses sources of genocidal plans, and separately examines tensions caused by AI representations in androids. In the light of the analysis, AI is a screen on which phantasms related to the tensions in the global risk society are projected. The anxiety of AI rebellion is an emanation of our loss and fear in technicized world. The popular culture conceals a worrisome fact that we are responsible for potential disaster.

The article presents the results of the systematic analysis of the resolutions of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (10th–8th terms of office) as a mechanism aimed at shaping the collective memory of the Polish society. It outlines a research field and characterizes a legislative mechanism. Further, the article discusses research techniques and methods, and presents partial research results. The author shows that commemorative resolutions are an important element of the state politics of memory and lead to the emergence of various commemorative initiatives. On the other hand, their significance is moderated by the state of collective memory and the dominant topoi and public discourse strategies. Most often the resolutions using the so-called “constructive strategies” do not seek to radically reformulate the state of social historical consciousness. They disregard inconvenient persons and events and foster petrification of social imagination and marginalization of the minority communities of memory.

The article is devoted to biopolitics and forms of biopower in the post-apocalyptic worlds created in the texts of popular culture. The author’s theses are based on the analysis of 147 novels and short stories, as well as 246 films and series. The study describes the types of threats to the communities of survivors, strategies for dealing with them and their impact on the post-apocalyptic form of socialization. Although the analysis is not limited to the nuclear apocalypse, it pays special attention to radioactivity as a “magic factor” used in popular works. The author answers the question about what these thought experiments tell us about collective consciousness and “subconscious” of the late modern risk societies.

The article analyzes selected literary representations of partial genocide in the Congo Free State (1880–1908) as documents of the discourse of truth (in the sense of M. Foucault) in a given era. Considerations use achievements of the postcolonial studies as well as genocide studies. The analysis focuses on the comparison of two books – Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and The Dream of the Celt by Mario Vargas Llosa. The author reconstructs the way indigenous people are presented in both novels, showing elements of the racist discourse in Conrad’s novel and the changes that Llosa introduced. He describes the character of Kurtz (a colonist and an order represented by him) as “empty signifiers” of the colonial system. The article analyzes the extent to which both authors adequately presented the functioning of the colonial system. It indicates the dimensions of Casement’s exclusion – the main character of Llosa’s novel – referring also to the analysis of gender studies. The author concludes that both works reveal the weakness of criticism undertaken from the particular position – Llosa and Conrad were high rank men in the hierarchy of the global capitalist society. Regardless of the intent, they reproduce the discourse of truth, establishing not only the subject of cognition, but also their own identity.
