Even though numerical simulations offer a lot of Information and can reduce the costs and the time for development, engine testing is still necessary. The main difference from 10 or 20 years ago is that more data is required and that the tests are more sophisticated. New trends and the legislation call for an automated testing. Many laboratories have dynamometers, which are still in working order, but do not offer the performances needed for testing. A way how to improve the testing capability by the use of modern data acquisition system with an existing dynamometer is presented in this article. The system enables testing of the external characteristics of an engine, testing over prescribed testing modes, testing of the acceleration of the engine and acquisition of large amount of data including engine torque, speed, temperatures and pressures.
