The effect of growth retardant (Bercema CCC), cereal components (wheat vs. tríncale), legume components (peas vs. field peas vs. vetch) and their percentage (0 vs. 15 vs. 30) in cereal-grain mixtures on their yield and its structure were studied in the years 1990-1992. It was found that the botanical composition of the mixtures had no effect on their yield nor on the yield of cereals. However, the yield of legume plants was significantly affected. The legume plants grown with triticale gave 15% higher yields as compared with those grown with wheat. The yield of mixtures was determined by the percentage of a legume component: the higher percentage of a legume plant, the lower yield of a mixture. Bercema CCC shortened cereal internods, on average, by 14.6 cm. The effect of the retardant was most apparent when applied on cerclas grown as monocultures. This effect was least pronounced when the retardant was applied on wheat grown with legume components contributing 30% to a cereal-legume mixture.

Both growth retardants, Bercema CCC and Flordimex T, increased yields of winter triticale grain. Flordimex T was more effective and incresed the yield by 15%. Both retardants shortened hight of stems and individual internods of winter triticale plants. Also, the retardants affected significantly yields of winter vetch seeds and its density per area unit. Fiordimex T nearly doubled yields of winter vetch and its density per area unit.

Studies on development of morphological traits in genetically diversified filed bean cv, (Nadwiślański - traditional cv., Tinos - self-terminating cv.) were conducted in 1996-1997. The plant productivity analysis included the site of seed formation on shoot, i.e. their location on the shoot - a tactor differentiating the share of individual segments of fruiting part of the shoot in yield structure formation and in chemical composition of seeds. Two-factor model of variance analysis with interaction was applied in the calculation as a basis for determination of significance of differences of studied features. Means, standard deviations and range were determined, as well as phenotypic correlations between features. As a result of the investigations it was found that total yield, seed yield of individual plants and yield indicator revealed changes caused mainly by the year of cultivation and chosen variety. A number of seeds per plant the best described it productivity (R2 = 0.9) irrespective of the variety. Pods grouped in the middle segment of fruiting shoot part had the greatest share in the amount of yield. Contents of basic nutrients, i.e. total protein, crude fibre and raw fat in seeds did not change depending on the site of their formation on the shoot. Opposite tendencies were detected as regard tannins and tripsine inhibitors whose higher contents were found in the seeds from the upper section of fruiting shoot. It was particularly visible in self-terminating variety.

Field studies were conducted to test the effect of four seed rates of spring vetch cv. Kwarta grown in mixtures (by seed weight) with covered oat cv. Dukat (100 + 0, 50+130, 40 + 150, and 30 + 170 kg/ha, respectively) on vetch yield, over a 3-year period (1996-1998). Total yield of the mixtures (oat + vetch) was systematically increased by decreasing seed rates of vetch. Consequently, the highest yield of the mixtures (2.88 t/ha) was obtained from the combination using the lowest seed rate for vetch (30 kg/ha) and the highest seed rate for oat (170 kg/ha). Yield of vetch seeds was conversely related to the total yield of the mixtures. It was also affected by seed rates of vetch and climatic conditions during growing seasons. The highest yields of vetch seeds and vetch seed protein were obtained from vetch grown in pure sowing (3.86 dt/ha and 121 kg/ha, respectively). With increasing contribution of oat to the vetch:oat mixtures, these yields decreased linearly.

The one-factorial field experiments were conducted from 1995 to 1997 at the Agricultural University of Kraków Prusy Experimenta! Station to evaluate yield and chemical composition of field bean grown either in pure culture or in mixtures with white lupin and spring vetch. Grain yield of field bean grown in pure culture was 4.7 dt/ha, 11.6 dt/ha, and 10 dt/ha higher when compared with that of field bean + white łupin, field bean + spring vetch, and field bean 4- white łupin + spring vetch mixtures, respectively. The highest indices of protein quality were obtained for field bean + white łupin mixture (CS = 35.5 and EAAI = 69.5), and were higher than those determined for field bean + white łupin + spring vetch (C = 31.9 and EAAI = 67.8), field bean grown in pure culture (CS = 29.8 and EAAI = 66.8) and field bean + spring vetch (CS = 29.6 and EAAI = 63.4) mixtures. The highest antitrypsin activity of seeds was detected in spring vetch and the lowest in white lupine seeds. Tannins were present only in field bean seeds.
