The paper examines interjections and their position in the Czech language system, focusing on their definition and classification. We first concentrate on problematic transitions between interjections and paralinguistic cues (sounds) and then on the definition of interjections from three basic perspectives - morphological, syntactic and semantic. We review the concept of interjections in some Czech grammars and provide commentary and critical remarks regarding it. We conclude with the proposal of an all-embracing definition and a new classification of interjections.

In this paper we study the use of interjections in various types of written texts (professional, non-fiction, journalistic, fiction and written dialogical texts on the internet) and in dialogical speech. Investigating the use of interjections in written texts, we drew upon corpora SYN2000, SYN2005 and SYN2006PUB, and further we utilized our own excerptions and experiences with written texts. In examing spoken language, wwe extracted data from the Czech National Corpus and we excerpted sone TV discussions, talk shows and everyday spoken speech. We focused on a frequency of interjections in a text type, on preferred idioms and their classes. In the conclusion of the paper, we compare our results to the information provided in Czech dictionaries.
