The article presents strategic dilemmas of the Bełchatów mining and energy complex. The coal lobby aims to continue the conventional profile by launching a new open pit in Złoczew, and experts from environmental organizations propose to enter the green investment trend. A responsible strategy for the survival of the Bełchatów energy complex as an employer must assume alternative scenarios.

The carbon footprint is an indicator of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that arise as a result of an entity's activity. In this article, I am looking for a carbon footprint in the way Poles think about climate and energy. In this context, by “carbon footprint” I mean the level of awareness of individual classes and social strata regarding the basic issues in this area: the attitude towards the concept of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the attitude towards the policy of moving away from coal towards renewable energy. Sociological research shows how pro-ecological orientation and sceptical orientation are rooted in the social structure, in the consciousness of individual classes and social strata. The empirical data that I present is part of a study conducted by the City of Warsaw in November and December 2021 (carried out by ARC Rynek i Opinia Sp.z o.o.) on the environmental awareness of Warsaw residents.

The information relates to three sessions of the Seminar. During the first session, the strategic issues of the Energy Transformation was discussed. During the second session the discussion was based on a presentation by Dr Michael Kranhold entitled Energy Transformation in Germany: selected practical experience. During the third Seminar on: Energy and climate and the crisis of civilization, the starting point for the discussion was Edwin Bendyk’s book: In Poland, i.e. everywhere. A thing about the fall and future of the world.

The paper deals with the perturbations in social dialogue in Poland, and addresses the question of whether the formula of tripartite social dialogue introduced over 20 years ago has any future. The author claims tripartism in Poland has chronically suffered from internal imbalance due to instrumental approach of the government(s) towards social partners. A possible way out of the severe crisis of social dialogue and to opening of a new chapter could lead through civic dialogue, in a formula embracing a broader spectrum of actors such as NGOs. Trade unions and employer organisations face a dilemma of a strategic weight: whether to allow new actors to the negotiation table with a view of reviving the process or defending their current position as sole partners for the government risking the continuing agony of social dialogue and petrification of unilateral government policy.

Article tackles the idea of environmental and participatory democracy in Poland. Due to Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters known as the Aarhus Convention people should be involved in decisions concerning environment and energy issues in the country. All large investments, and those are certainly investments in energy infrastructure, are associated with a variety of interest groups and organizations. The main goal of this article is to show the decision making processes do not come across the knowledge and public information on nuclear energy in Poland. We present the context and background for the structural model of energy decisions using and reinterpreting survey data from 2014 and 2015 from the opinion polls on various sources of energy in Poland. From this point of departure we distinguish the micro-, meso- and macro- level of energy decisions.

W artykule pokazujemy dwa czynniki kształtujące stosunek społeczeństwa do zmiany ustrojowej.

There are two factors presented in the paper that have an impact on the general public attitude towards the change of the sociopolitical system. The first factor is the affiliation of individuals to a specific social class or stratum. The second factor is the attitude of these classes and strata towards democratic values. What is particularly significant in that respect is the acceptance of the notions of “democratic government” and “nondemocratic government”. The empirical data used in the analysis are based on research by the Public Opinion Research Centre (CBOS ). The important cognitive aspect of the article is a verification of the following hypothesis: the social classes and strata that have existed since the times of socialism accept democratic values to a lesser degree than the classes and strata established during the transformation of the sociopolitical system. The paper is the presentation of the theoretical model of social structure, based on two separate categories of social differentiation: social classes and social strata. The criterion of this differentiation is the division into those whose means of existence are based on private property of means of labour and rent vs. those based on public property of means of labour and rent. The theoretical background of the conception is the class theories of Marx and Weber.
