The purpose of this article is to characterize the activities of the SAR service in terms of the possibility of using autonomous maritime (flying and surface) systems in its composition. The direct reference body of water is the Baltic Sea (The Polish SAR Responsibility Zone). The research problem has taken the form of a question: how autonomous maritime systems (air and surface) are able to increase the effectiveness of search and rescue operations and improve the safety of rescuers. A working hypothesis was formulated, which assumed that autonomous systems operating in the marine environment (both airborne and surface) present the potential to increase the effectiveness of SAR service operations by improving search and rescue operations (shortening their time) and increasing safety of operators (rescuers. The main research method used to solve the main problem and to verify the research hypothesis was the analysis of available domestic and foreign literature. For the purposes of the research, an interview with an employee of the SAR (Ministry of the Treasury in Władysławowo) was conducted, and the contents of scientific articles and websites were also helpful. In the first part, the article discussed the tasks, area of activity and equipment of the SAR service. Next, the author focused on the presentation and comparison of surface and air units. In the next part, a model of combining the surface and air units in terms of increasing efficiency was presented.
