The aim of the study described in this paper is to verify whether the structure of a modal predicate influences the type of modality expressed by the English modal verb should. The study uses language samples excerpted from The Corpus of Contemporary American English. It has adopted the model of the semantic field of modal expressions proposed by Angelika Kratzer. Additionally, this framework has been used to determine types of modality in this study. The analysis focuses on the interaction within the semantic field of the modal should with various forms of the main verb within the modal predicate structure.

Struktura orzeczenia a semantyka angielskiego czasownika modalnego should. Streszczenie. Celem badania zreferowanego w tekście było ustalenie czy struktura orzeczenia modalnego wywiera wpływ na typ modalności wyrażanej przez angielski czasownik modalny should. Przedmiotowe badanie wykonano z wykorzystaniem próbek języka zebranych z Korpusu współczesnej amerykańskiej odmiany języka angielskiego (The Corpus of Contemporary American English). W celu jego przeprowadzenia zaadaptowano model pola semantycznego wyrażeń modalnych (the semantic field of modal expressions) zaproponowany przez Angelikę Kratzer. Model ten posłużył także do określenia typów modalności w badaniu. Analizie poddano interakcję w polu semantycznym czasownika should z różnymi formami czasownika głównego w obrębie struktury orzeczenia modalnego. The present article aims to demonstrate a transboundary approach to a linguistic modality analysis. The transboundary approach is perceived as such in which a researcher needs to cross certain boundaries in their studies on modal verbs. These include: notional boundaries, word boundaries, as well as the domains of the semantic field of modal expressions. The author attempts to illustrate this with a study of modality-(grammatical) aspect interaction and modality-negation-(grammatical)aspect interaction, which are exemplified with the English modal auxiliary must. The analysis was carried out on 147 language samples excerpted from The Corpus of Contemporary American English.

Artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie transgranicznego podejścia do analiz modalności językowej. Transgraniczność jest tutaj rozumiana jako przekraczanie granic w badaniu czasowników modalnych. Znajdują się wśród nich granice pojęciowe, granice wyrazu, a także granice stref tworzących pole semantyczne badanego wyrażenia. Na przykładzie angielskiego czasownika modalnego must autor podejmuje próbę zanalizowania zjawiska interakcji modalności z aspektem gramatycznym oraz modalności z negacją i aspektem gramatycznym, ukazując w ten sposób podejście transgraniczne. Badanie przeprowadzono na 147 próbkach materiału językowego z korpusu współczesnej amerykańskiej odmiany języka angielskiego (The Corpus of Contemporary American English).Contemporary American English.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie polskojęzycznym czytelnikom modelu pola semantycznego wyrażeń modalnych zaprezentowanego przez Angelikę Kratzer. Wyróżnia się w nim trzy domeny interpretacyjne: siłę modalną, podstawę modalną oraz źródło uporządkowania światów możliwych. Dwie ostatnie to tła konwersacyjne, które wpływają na interpretację modalną. Dualność podstawy modalnej stwarza także możliwość utworzenia binarnej typologii modalności. Oprócz tego artykuł proponuje przekład anglojęzycznej terminologii na język polski.

The article aims at bringing the model of the semantic field of modal expressions presented by Angelika Kratzer to the attention of Polish-speaking readers. The framework consists of three domains: modal force, modal base and ordering source. The last two are conversational backgrounds. The duality of the modal base also allows for a binary typology of modality. In addition, the paper proposes Polish equivalents of English-language terminology.
