Stainless steels are structural materials used for a wide range of applications. One of the fields of application of these highly corrosion resistant materials is for various medical applications. Different methods of mechanical property improvement have been studied in recent years to increase the durability of components manufactured from these materials. The main goal of this study was an analysis of fatigue strength improvement of the AISI 316Ti austenitic stainless steel by shot peening. A significant improvement of surface hardness, yield strength and fatigue limit by shot peening was observed in this study. This is despite increasing the surface roughness which usually degrades material’s fatigue strength.

This work deals with the fractography analysis of nickel-base superalloy Inconel 718 fatigued at 700°C in air atmosphere in the high cycle region. During cyclic loading of this alloy at high temperatures some different mechanisms compared to cyclic loading at ambient temperature take place. Cyclic plastic deformation at high temperatures causes some structural changes, which could have some influence.

This paper will explore the mutual correlation of fatigue characteristics ((Kath, σc, ac = f (Rm)) of five structural steels tested at high frequency loading based on tests (f ≈ 20 kHz, T = 20 ± 10 °C, R = -1). Different fatigue resistance parameters have different meanings and misunderstanding can lead to significant quality problems in component operation. Consequently, it is necessary to completely understand the relation between the two most important fatigue characteristics which are fatigue limit σc and the threshold value of the stress intensity factor amplitude Kath and how they act with changing of steel ultimate tensile strength.

The paper is devoted to an experimental examination of the influence of loading type on the shape of fatigue lifetime curve of the high-carbon-chromium bearing steel (100Cr6). The push-pull and rotating bending loading tests (R=-1) were used with the aim to obtain experimental data in the region from [...] cycles to [...] cycles. The shape of fatigue lifetime curve of 100Cr6 bearing steel depends on the loading type. The S-N curve obtained using rotating bending consists of two parts corresponding to surface and subsurface fatigue crack initiation, resulting in a stepwise S-N curve. In this case, the typical stepwise S-N relationship clearly indicates that the mechanism of fatigue crack initiation transfers from the surface to subsurface with decreasing the applied stress level. On the other hand, the S-N curves obtained at push-pull loading revealed a continuous downward slope without any indication for a plateau region and subsurface fatigue crack initiation occurs in the whole range of amplitudes. This fact has to be taken in consideration while selecting a structural material.

This work presents information about the influence of shot-peening, nickel and chromium galvanic metallization on the fatigue properties of S235JRG2 steel in the ultra-high-cycle region of loading […] obtained at high-frequency fatigue testing […]. Shot-peening is a technological process during which the surface layer is exposed to plastic deformation which is caused by high speed shooting using small metallic or ceramic particles. Galvanic metallization by nickel deposition is one of the most thorough processes of surface finish and has many applications, mostly decorative-protective and technical ones. Technical coatings are used in order to modify the proprieties of the surface that is being covered for protection against corrosion but also in order to increase the hardness and resistance to wear. The coatings produced by galvanic metallization increase corrosion resistance but in doing so, they introduce tensile stresses into the surface layer which act negatively on fatigue proprieties. Nickel is employed for the production of final coatings or it can be used for the production of inter-layers in chrome galvanic metallization.

Nickel base superalloys are hi-tech materials intended for high temperature applications. This property owns a complex microstructure formed by matrix of Ni and variety of precipitates. The type, form and the amount of these phases significantly affect the resulting properties of these alloys. At sufficiently long exposure to high temperatures, the transformation phase can occur, which can lead to degradation of properties of these alloys. A cyclic plastic deformation can accelerate these changes, and they could occur at significantly lower temperatures or in shorter time of exposure. The aim of this study is to describe phase transformation, which can occur by a cyclic plastic deformation at high temperatures in nickel base superalloy Inconel 718.

In this paper the authors publish own experimental results of examination of low-alloyed cast steel STN 42 2707 fatigue properties (near- threshold regime of fatigue crack propagation for rates from da/dN =5.6x10-9m.cycle-1 to da/dN =10-12 m.cycle-1 and Kath at da/dN =10-12 m.cycle-1) initial state and after long-term heating (T = 400 °C, t = 4000 hours ≈ 167 days) obtained at high-frequency loading (f ≈ 20 kHz, T= 20 ± 5 °C, R = -1). The long-term heating of material caused decrease of Kath and increase of fatigue crack growth rate in the near-threshold regime; then worse of low-alloyed cast steel STN 42 2707 fatigue properties.
